{"id":7568,"date":"2025-06-23T08:44:09","date_gmt":"2025-06-23T08:44:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/7568\/"},"modified":"2025-06-23T08:44:09","modified_gmt":"2025-06-23T08:44:09","slug":"great-white-shark-surfaces-off-popular-new-jersey-beach-coast-on-jaws-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/7568\/","title":{"rendered":"Great white shark surfaces off popular New Jersey beach coast &#8212; on &#8216;Jaws&#8217; anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Spielberg couldn\u2019t have scripted it better.<\/p>\n<p>An 11-foot great white shark named \u201cDold\u201d made a surprise cameo off a popular stretch of New Jersey\u2019s beach coast Friday \u2014 the 50th anniversary of the premiere of \u201cJaws.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 761-pound predator, which had been tagged by researchers at OCEARCH, sent a satellite \u201cping\u201d in the early morning about 40 miles off Monmouth County, which boasts beaches such as Long Branch, Asbury Park and Spring Lake, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.app.com\/story\/news\/local\/animals\/2025\/06\/20\/nj-jersey-shore-ocearch-great-white-shark-dold-contender-nukumi-monmouth-ocean\/84285084007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Asbury Park Press reported.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dold\u2019s appearance overlapped with the 50th anniversary of the Hollywood shark thriller \u201cJaws,\u201d which was famously directed by Steven Spielberg and premiered on June 20, 1975.<\/p>\n<p>The shark, who is named after SeaWorld conservationist Christopher Dold, was first tagged in February near the Florida-Georgia border after being briefly held on a research vessel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.app.com\/story\/news\/local\/animals\/2025\/06\/20\/nj-jersey-shore-ocearch-great-white-shark-dold-contender-nukumi-monmouth-ocean\/84285084007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to OCEARCH.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A satellite tag was placed on Dold\u2019s dorsal fin, and an acoustic device was tucked inside his body to allow researchers to track his movements, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers described the shark about 25 years old \u2014 not quite an adult yet \u2014 and said he could grow up to 18 feet.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.57781202;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"36316812\" width=\"931\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/ocearch-org-11-foot-great-106948734.jpg\" alt=\"Map showing the tracked path of a great white shark off the New Jersey coast.\" class=\"wp-image-36316812\"  \/>The 761-pound predator, which had been tagged by researchers at OCEARCH, sent a satellite \u201cping\u201d in the early morning about 40 miles off Monmouth County. ocearch.org<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.77777778;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"36316245\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/ocearch-org-11-foot-great-106948733.jpg\" alt=\"Underwater photo of an 11-foot great white shark, Dold, tagged by OCEARCH.\" class=\"wp-image-36316245\"  \/>Dold was first tagged in February near the Florida-Georgia border after being briefly held on a research vessel. ocearch.org<\/p>\n<p>Since being tagged, Dold swam south to the gulf of Florida and curved back north in May to cruise along the East Coast as part of his seasonal migration, the nonprofit documented.<\/p>\n<p>His dorsal \u201cping\u201d occurs when his fin breaks the ocean surface long enough \u2014 or for about 90 seconds \u2014 for a satellite to capture it, researchers said.<\/p>\n<p>The nonprofit has tagged more than 100 great white sharks in the past 15 years, the outlet said.<\/p>\n<p>Dold\u2019s weight is nothing compared to some sharks previously tagged by the organization, such as Contender, a 1,653-pound bruiser last seen near the East Coast\u2019s Outer Banks, or Nukumi, a 3,541-pound female who hasn\u2019t pinged since 2021.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Spielberg couldn\u2019t have scripted it better.
