{"id":757408,"date":"2026-04-27T20:55:28","date_gmt":"2026-04-27T20:55:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/757408\/"},"modified":"2026-04-27T20:55:28","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T20:55:28","slug":"philadelphia-relaunches-its-a-summer-thing-initiative-nbc10-philadelphia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/757408\/","title":{"rendered":"Philadelphia relaunches \u2018It\u2019s a Summer Thing\u2019 initiative \u2013 NBC10 Philadelphia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Philadelphia officials are bringing back an annual initiative aimed at keeping young people engaged, employed and safe this summer.<\/p>\n<p>The program, called \u201cIt\u2019s a Summer Thing,&#8221; is designed to connect families with free camps and activities while linking teens to paid job opportunities across the city.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telemundo62.com\/noticias\/local\/actividades-empleo-verano-2026-filadelfia-adolescentes-jovenes\/2576880\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">L\u00e9elo en espa\u00f1ol aqu\u00ed.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it comes to our teens in particular we want to make sure we keep them occupied with something positive so nothing negative sneaks in the door right,\u201d Chief Deputy Mayor Vanessa Garrett Harley said.<\/p>\n<p>The School District of Philadelphia said it will have more than 100 buildings open and expects about 21,000 students to enroll in programs.<\/p>\n<p>Philadelphia Parks and Recreation plans to host 163 day camps throughout the city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re about to meet together the two departments to make sure we have a plan for the summer so safety is on the top of our list,\u201d Parks and Recreation Commissioner Sue Slawson said.<\/p>\n<p>Keeping young people safe and out of trouble is a priority for the administration.<\/p>\n<p>Police data shows the number of minors arrested during the summer months has been trending downward in recent years, from 666 in 2023 to 590 last summer, but officials note that still amounts to hundreds of young people in trouble. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou give me access to opportunities so I can make money to earn what I want in life it goes a long way in reducing violence,\u201d Mayor Cherelle Parker said.<\/p>\n<p>The city is aiming to connect young people to more than 10,000 jobs this summer, including roles as camp counselors and lifeguards. They said they have opportunities for anyone looking to work and grow. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s a low barrier. It\u2019s an amazing way to earn money over the summer, and it\u2019s a r\u00e9sum\u00e9 builder, but also can give you an opportunity to try something and be like, &#8221; Oh no, thank you, I\u2019m not into that&#8221; or &#8220;Well.
