Allyson Felix, the most decorated female track and field athlete in Olympic history, is coming out of retirement with the goal of competing in her hometown\u2019s Olympic Games in 2028.<\/p>\n
Felix, 40, hasn\u2019t competed since claiming a gold medal in the 4\u00d7400-meter relay and a bronze medal in the mixed 4\u00d7400 event at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene.<\/p>\n
\u201cLet\u2019s go after the thing. Let\u2019s be vulnerable,\u201d Felix told Time in an interview posted Monday.\u201dYou know, at this age, I should probably be staying home and taking care of my kids, doing all that. And just, why not? Let\u2019s flip it on its head.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bob Kersee, Felix\u2019s longtime coach, said he did not have any comment at this time.<\/p>\n
Felix said the driving force behind her decision to try to compete in an sixth Olympic Games at age 42 was the chance for a \u201ca once-in-a-lifetime homecoming. And it is the only thing powerful enough to pull me back.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI would probably be upset at myself if I just didn\u2019t give it a try,\u201d added the Los Angeles native, who starred at L.A. Baptist High and USC. \u201cHowever it turns out, I\u2019ll still be there with my kids, hanging out and cheering everybody on.\u201d<\/p>\n
Felix is the mother of two 7-year-old Camryn and 2-year-old Trey.<\/p>\n
Since retiring, Felix co-founded Saysh, a women\u2019s footwear and apparel company, and raised awareness to women\u2019s rights and health issues. She is a member of the International Olympic Committee\u2019s Athletes\u2019 Commission. She is also a member of LA 28\u2019s Athletes\u2019 Commission.<\/p>\n
Felix has 11 Olympic medals, seven of them gold, including the 2012 200-meter title and six relays golds.<\/p>\n
Felix last competed at the Olympics in the 2021 Games in Tokyo, picking up another relay gold medal and a bronze medal at 400 meters.<\/p>\n
Making the Team USA for the Los Angeles Games won\u2019t be easy. Four of the top six women in the world at 400 meters last season were from the U.S., although potential training partner Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, the 2025 World champion in the 400 and second-fastest woman in history in the event, may focus on winning a third consecutive gold medal in the 400 hurdles.<\/p>\n
Jamaica\u2019s Merlene Ottey is the oldest woman to capture an Olympic sprint medal, claiming the 100-meter bronze at the age of 40 at the 2000 Games in Sydney.
