(Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1955:<\/strong> Eight people \u2014 including a Chicago fire captain \u2014 were killed and 20 others injured in a fire at the <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-two-fire-probes-opened-t\/171078888\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Green Mill hotel<\/a> at 518 N. Green St. in Chicago. Officials believed the fire was <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-fire-officials-blame-hot\/171079026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">intentionally set<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Weather records <\/strong>(from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/wrh\/climate?wfo=lot\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Weather Service, Chicago<\/a>)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High temperature: <strong>86 degrees<\/strong> (1915)<\/li>\n<li>Low temperature: <strong>28 degrees<\/strong> (1992)<\/li>\n<li>Precipitation: <strong>2.04 inches<\/strong> (1981)<\/li>\n<li>Snowfall: <strong>0.4 inches<\/strong> (1951)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>1977:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-new-ronald-mcdonald-home\/170505698\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ronald McDonald House<\/a> opened in Chicago. The second of its kind in the United States, it was housed inside a former convent at 622 W. (Nuccio DiNuzzo\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2012:<\/strong> Bulls guard <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-hes-down-were-all-do\/171077095\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Derrick Rose<\/a> \u2014 who had already missed 27 games during the 2011-12 season with back, groin, toe, ankle and foot injuries \u2014 tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee with 1:22 left to play in the Eastern Conference quarterfinal opener against the Philadelphia 76ers.<\/p>\n<p>The Bulls lost that series and, eventually, their championship window as\u00a0Rose endured a succession of knee surgeries that eventually led to his trade to the New York Knicks.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Barbara Byrd-Bennett, right, leaves the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse in Chicago on April 28, 2017, after being sentenced for her role in a bribery scandal. (Terrence Antonio James\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2017:<\/strong> Former Chicago Public Schools CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2020\/05\/06\/former-cps-head-barbara-byrd-bennett-convicted-of-corruption-moved-from-prison-to-ohio-halfway-house\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Barbara Byrd-Bennett<\/a> was sentenced to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2017\/04\/28\/byrd-bennett-sobs-while-trying-to-explain-corruption-gets-4-12-years-in-prison\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">4\u00bd years<\/a> in prison for scheming to collect hundreds of thousands of dollars in kickbacks in return for steering contracts to SUPES Academy, an education consulting firm where she had formerly worked.<\/p>\n<p>She was released about a year early, through an initiative to free inmates particularly vulnerable to COVID-19.
