Grocery Outlet<\/a> will open a new Pacific Beach store on Thursday at 1211 Garnet Ave., expanding the discount chain\u2019s presence in coastal San Diego.<\/p>\n

The location previously housed Thrifty, followed by a Trader Joe\u2019s and a gym, before a period of vacancy. The store will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. and open to customers the same day.<\/p>\n

Two independent owners will run the store under a licensing agreement with Grocery Outlet.
One of them, Marc Aronsohn, said the company operates through an independent-operator model in which local owners run daily operations, hire staff, and work in accordance with a corporate system that supplies inventory.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe get a licensing agreement to run the facility under the Grocery Outlet banner,\u201d he said.
\u201cWe hire the team and run the facility under our own company entity, but operate within the
Grocery Outlet system.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said the model allows operators to tailor product selection within that system, with the
Pacific Beach store reflects local demand, including items for health-oriented and pet-friendly households.<\/p>\n

Grocery Outlet sources inventory through opportunistic purchases from manufacturers and
distributors, resulting in a rotating selection of goods.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you see something you like, it might not be there a week later,\u201d Aronsohn said. He said the model allows the store to offer lower prices than traditional grocery retailers. \u201cWe try to save the customer on average 40 percent minimum on the shopping basket,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The owners said Pacific Beach has shifted in recent years from a predominantly college-focused neighborhood to one with more young families, in part because many former students have remained in the area as they\u2019ve grown older and started families. That shift has changed shopping habits, with more residents focused on ingredients and food quality while raising children.<\/p>\n

The store includes 90-minute free parking behind the building on Garnet Avenue, Aronsohn
said.<\/p>\n

Opening-day promotions include gift cards of varying amounts for the first 100 customers and a top prize of $500, along with free reusable bags during opening week while supplies last.<\/p>\n

Vendor representatives will offer samples, and a taco truck event is planned for Saturday. The store will also donate $1,000 to St. Brigid Parish of San Diego as part of its opening activities, according to company representatives.<\/p>\n

Grocery Outlet operates nearly 500 stores across California and 10 other states, including about 20 in San Diego County.
