The presence of alcohol on campus \u2014 a violation of University policy and applicable local law \u2014 was also identified as a contributing factor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThe safety and well-being of students is, and will remain, the University\u2019s highest priority,\u201d the administration wrote in the address. \u201cWhen that safety is compromised by anyone under any circumstances, the University will act decisively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The informal spring gathering tradition has been a staple of campus life for years, honored annually under the current administration, but going forward, large-scale events at the institution are required to get approval and follow the university\u2019s safety processes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><b>A new standard for campus events<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Going forward, organizations or groups seeking to gather on campus in large numbers must submit formal requests and adhere to all applicable space rental, staffing and security requirements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The administration acknowledged the weight of the decision, noting it \u201cis not made lightly,\u201d but emphasized that the incidents reflect both a serious safety concern and the operational realities the University faces when hosting large, unplanned gatherings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">EWU noted that it already makes \u201csignificant, intentional investments\u201d to support alumni engagement at officially sanctioned events such as Homecoming, including enhanced security, structured programming and coordinated planning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><b>Alumni still welcome \u2014 with structure<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The University was clear that alumni remain a valued part of the EWU community, but stressed that large-scale engagement must occur within a framework the institution can safely support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThe University will not assume that level of risk or expense for events that are not formally organized, approved, and managed by the institution,\u201d the letter stated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Alumni are strongly encouraged to return to campus during Fall homecoming and other University-sponsored events, where the administration says it is \u201cfully prepared to host accordingly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The letter closed with a message of shared responsibility: \u201cEdward Waters University belongs to all of us.
