\n\tSPOILER ALERT: <\/strong>This article contains major spoilers for the seventh episode of \u201cDaredevil: Born Again<\/a>\u201d Season 2, now streaming on Disney+.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cDaredevil: Born Again\u201d has killed off another major character \u2014 but the fatal murder scene was originally shot with a much happier ending. It wasn\u2019t until after filming that showrunner Dario Scardapane decided to reverse course and add post-production special effects to put the nail in the coffin for one of Kingpin\/Mayor Wilson Fisk\u2019s (Vincent D\u2019Onofrio) closest allies.<\/p>\n

\n\tKingpin\u2019s enforcer Buck Cashman (Arty Froushan) shockingly murders Deputy Mayor Daniel Blake (Michael Gandolfini) in a showdown of Fisk\u2019s two right-hand men. Cashman wants journalist BB Urich (Genneya Walton) dead for leaking Kingpin\u2019s sinister plans to the public, but Blake can\u2019t go through with killing her after the two have grown close. Blake decides to defy Cashman and protect Urich, and his good deed proves to be his demise. Near the end of the penultimate episode, Cashman confronts Blake about Urich, shoves him to the ground in a scuffle and shoots him dead.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut that wasn\u2019t what happened during filming.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen the actors shot the scene, Cashman points his gun at Blake on the ground, but doesn\u2019t pull the trigger. He spares the young politician and tells him to run away, but later has to explain to Kingpin what happened.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBuck had to face up to Fisk, but he doesn\u2019t admit it,\u201d Froushan tells Variety. \u201cHe lies to Fisk\u2019s face, basically, and says, \u2018I killed him,\u2019 but obviously he doesn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tScardapane further revealed what would\u2019ve happened with Blake if he had survived the fatal encounter, like it was originally filmed. \u201cThe way that it would have gone is that he stayed in the Fisk administration,\u201d he says. \u201cHe goes in to resign and the new interim mayor is like, \u2018I\u2019m not taking your resignation. I\u2019m going to keep you close because I don\u2019t trust you.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn deciding at first to keep Blake alive, Scardapane explained that the character was \u201cgiven chance after chance after chance, and because he defended BB, he paid \u2014 and that stains Buck\u2019s soul.\u201d But then, in the editing room, the showrunner realized that \u201cthis feels so wrong\u201d and that it \u201cdoesn\u2019t feel like the story was earned.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn hindsite, the showrunner realized, keeping Blake alive \u201cwas kind of meh and a non-story\u2026 Sometimes the arc is built in and you\u2019re extending it a little too far. Like, wait a second. He and Buck, in their twisted friendship, both had to be true to who they were. That\u2019s the last moment because everything afterwards seemed kind of like a weird, lame coda that didn\u2019t pay off.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tScardapane called Gandolfini and explained the decision to alter the scene and kill off his character.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was like, \u2018Dude, I\u2019ve got the worst news,’\u201d Scardapane says. \u201cAnd he\u2019s like, \u2018I know exactly what you\u2019re gonna say, and it\u2019s the right choice.\u2019 He felt in that moment that there\u2019s no way he\u2019s getting out of that apartment. It was funny because there were scenes shot of him after that moment, and it really feels like we\u2019re telling the wrong story here. I think it\u2019s a testament to how much we all love him, that we knew this character probably should not survive but we just couldn\u2019t bring ourselves to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSo, the post-production team added a gunshot to Cashman and Blake\u2019s final face-off. \u201cIn the editing room, we\u2019re like, \u2018We should try this,’\u201d Scardapane says. \u201cThey mocked it up really fast, and you could have heard a pin drop in the editing room after that \u2014 like it is at the end of the episode. It\u2019s just like, holy shit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCashman and Blake\u2019s scene now ends with the gunshot, shocking fans as another main character from Season 1 is wiped off the board.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe fact that, as actors, we didn\u2019t know that was gonna happen makes the scene maybe even more compelling,\u201d Froushan says. \u201cI love Michael Gandolfini like a brother. This season, the whole journey we have together is a movie. So I was gutted. I was really upset. But I think it raises the stakes of the story in a really exciting way that was maybe necessary for that storyline.\u201d<\/p>\n
