Owners Darcie and Randy Stokes are folding the checkered tablecloths after a final Mother\u2019s Day service on May 10.<\/p>\n<p>Originally opened by Bill Tassos and David Strauss in 1953, the Barn Door&#8217;s location was considered the &#8220;country&#8221; by many San Antonians. Still, it soon became a favorite for after-church lunches and birthday celebrations. The Stokes took the keys in 2011, only tweaking a few details of the timeworn interior.<\/p>\n<p>Tin signs for Clabber Girl baking powder and National Bohemian beer hang on the wall, wood captain\u2019s chairs seat fidgeting toddlers, and the menu is hardly legible with its curlicues and busy background. Not that most customers don\u2019t know it by heart.<\/p>\n<p>The price of the ribeye has gone up a few dollars, but it still retains its pride of place. The owners were never swayed by chain standards like seared ahi tuna. Instead, the spot offered comfort \u2014 oysters Rockefeller, wild boar and venison sausage, feathery buttermilk-dipped onion rings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"shortcode-media shortcode-media-rebelmouse-image\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"d1c24\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"01f8a81f60f144d47ff92228ee451249\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%201467%201100'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/the-barn-door-san-antonio.jpg\" width=\"1467\" height=\"1100\" alt=\"The Barn Door San Antonio\"\/> The Barn Door barely changed in its almost 73 years.The Barn Door\/ Facebook<\/p>\n<p>Although the Stokes issued a lengthy statement on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TheBarnDoorRestaurant\/posts\/pfbid02hJk83EF7CNd7XNPFCnyk4kmpAeWM1cQWvUX3kC9EYS4aeCAa6ajHzQcc8YkF4n9cl\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">social media<\/a> and a press release, they did not share the reasons behind the closure. Instead, the couple focused on legacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou welcomed us into your traditions. You trusted us with your milestones. You filled our dining rooms with life, and you made the Barn Door what it became,\u201d wrote the restaurant on social media. \u201cWe have been through so much together, and it has truly been the privilege of a lifetime to serve this city the steaks you have come to love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In anticipation of crowds wanting to say goodbye to the longtime staff, the Barn Door will switch to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebarndoorrestaurant.com\/reservations\/?fbclid=IwY2xjawRdhUpleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFUUmZlckF6ZzRVRUQ5MFZzc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHkZSJZdSdUg_jlodfreZ-laxdGYt2rsP4bpwlzZMngVBuZP-AltgxggpKCw-_aem_e2JjmlCVc45ZUsu2DAYgBA\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">reservation-only system<\/a> starting May 1. Hours will be Wednesday through Saturday, 5-10 pm, and Sunday, 11:30 am-8 pm, including Mother\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n<p>San Antonio expats who can\u2019t make it home still have a chance to relish the restaurant once more.
