There are too many responsibilities to attend.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"978c41ad-f232-481e-8a53-85f837ba9f4b\">That exchange, Thomas later wrote in a July 16 <a href=\"https:\/\/catholicstand.com\/the-necessity-of-exercise\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a> for Catholic Stand, revealed a deeper concern \u2014 priests are burning out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"2fbc37ca-efc0-45bb-8552-c5d50a174fe8\">\u201cOur Shepherds are precious to us,\u201d he wrote, \u201cand they are up against many challenges in this world as they do His work tirelessly. They can get physically, mentally, and emotionally drained.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"083f017d-b921-4a7e-9bbc-4e40ed2ede12\">According to Thomas, exercise is not just about physical health \u2014 it\u2019s a matter of vocation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"599db868-56bd-43ee-97a2-e882afcfb8e5\">\u201cBesides all the work they need to do for their Mission, their personal prayer and daily Mass, they need to keep some time for physical exercise too,\u201d he wrote. \u201cIt is much like the safety message one hears on boarding an airplane, in case of an emergency, put the safety mask first on yourself before helping others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"3efb2353-47e5-4fea-8b3b-1d85f85d8978\">Thomas added that this wisdom and burnout concern applies to the laity too.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"3b6af535-2f8a-4904-a1e2-70920ccd9a2a\">He wrote that Pope Leo XIV has modeled this balance, noting that media reported that the Holy Father regularly worked out at the gym before the conclave with a mix of cardio and weights and that he is known to enjoy a game of tennis.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"3c1d6142-90f3-40ba-8ffc-b4eb8420813e\">At the Jubilee of Sports in June, Thomas noted, Pope Leo reminded the faithful that exercise can cultivate virtue.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"c9dfda8a-794c-411e-9ece-2ce75875a185\">\u201cThe time you spend together in these days will offer you a valuable opportunity to think about the relationship between athletic activity and the virtue of hope,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen we think of it, sports are animated by hope, in the sense that they involve striving towards a goal, constantly trying to improve our performance and learning to work with others as a team.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"fb6b2933-d324-4e5d-bea8-1899dea61bdc\" class=\"has-text-align-center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/catholicvote.org\/pope-leo-calls-sports-a-remedy-for-modern-solitude\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>&gt;&gt; Pope Leo calls sports a remedy for modern solitude <\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"f1557bde-8680-42cd-942a-b1cf212e1e31\">Thomas noted that Pope Saint John Paul II <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/john-paul-ii\/en\/homilies\/2000\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_hom_20001029_jubilee-sport.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">echoed this truth<\/a> in the Jubilee Year 2000.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"c40b1fbe-ca8f-488d-a483-23fe276dc073\">\u201cEvery Christian is called to become a strong athlete of Christ, that is, a faithful and courageous witness to his Gospel,\u201d the Polish pope said. \u201cBut to succeed in this, he must persevere in prayer, be trained in virtue and follow the divine Master in everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"b17d6b44-8fda-44b4-b3d0-6dd4f39b1d1f\">Thomas also gave another example of someone who understood the virtues of exercise: <a href=\"https:\/\/catholicvote.org\/blessed-carlo-acutis-to-be-canonized-along-with-blessed-pier-giorgio-frassati-sept-7\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">soon-to-be-canonized<\/a> Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, a mountaineer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"049cb4d9-9943-4255-b0bc-bda1a54dcb8d\">He quoted Frassati: \u201cThe higher we go, the better we shall hear the Voice of Christ.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"ca641814-a643-420b-943a-f4f4fcfa2551\">During the COVID-19 lockdowns, Thomas took up a consistent exercise routine and lost 8 kg (17.6 pounds), he said.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"a721d6a4-4881-464a-a0a2-cad06c714936\">Moving more, lifting more, eating less, drinking less, and\u00a0 stressing less helped him lose weight.
