We meet the community where they are,” said Rachel Rios, executive director of La Familia Counseling Center. The center provides guidance for new parents on overcoming challenges, self-care and raising children. “So working with new parents on, what are some of those challenges of raising a baby, how do you take care of yourself so that you can take care of your child?” Rios said. Some lessons offered by the center, such as car seat installation and safe sleep practices, can be lifesaving. “A lot of our families are sometimes in transition and they don’t have a nursery set up traditionally. So being able to have a planned pathway wherever they go, they can have safe sleep for their child is very important,” Rios said. The center also provides parent education, home visitation, early learning programs, and school readiness initiatives. “We do parent education, we do home visitation, early learners, school readiness, you name it. We’re out there doing a lot of work to strengthen families,” Rios said. La Familia Counseling Center began more than 50 years ago, initially using mental health counseling to divert young people from the justice system. “What’s really visionary about that is that they were talking about mental health back in the 70s when that isn’t something people talked about,” Rios said. Today, the center has grown into a safe space for families, offering support during difficult times. “This is a safe place where they can come without judgment. We really embrace them. We let them know they’re not alone,” Rios said. The center also provides employment resources, including computer labs, job fairs, and typing tests. Many services, such as counseling, peer support groups, and crisis intervention, are offered in Spanish.See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter | Find us on YouTube here and subscribe to our channel

      SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

La Familia Counseling Center in Sacramento offers vital resources to help families navigate parenting challenges, employment opportunities and mental health support.

“We are available.
