Craig Venter, a scientist and entrepreneur who raced to decode the human genome, died on Wednesday in San Diego. He was 79.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">His death was announced by the J. Craig Venter Institute, a nonprofit research organization founded by Dr. Venter and based in San Diego and Rockville, Md. The institute said in a statement that Dr. Venter had been hospitalized recently for side effects from cancer treatment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">In the 1990s, Dr. Venter, a risk-taker and intense competitor, made a bold move when he decided that the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.genome.gov\/about-genomics\/educational-resources\/fact-sheets\/human-genome-project#:~:text=How%20much%20did%20the%20Human,and%20biotechnology%20industries%2C%20among%20others.\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Human Genome Project,<\/a> a $3 billion government program for decoding the human genome, was moving slowly enough that he could enter the race late and beat it with a much faster method.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">His gamble paid off. In 2000, his company, Celera, made a joint announcement with a rival group saying that they<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.nytimes.com\/www.nytimes.com\/library\/national\/science\/062700sci-genome.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> had assembled the first human genomes,<\/a> a landmark step toward uncovering the genetic basis of human disease and origins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Dr. Venter had a powerful ego. That was clear when he let slip that the anonymous donor whose genome Celera had sequenced was none other than his own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">But his drive and management skills helped him inspire loyalty and assemble teams of exceptional scientists, including the Nobel Prize-winning microbiologist Hamilton O. Smith. Together, they achieved one landmark after another in the nascent field of genomics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">In 1995, Dr. Venter revolutionized microbiology when he published the sequence of DNA letters in the bacterium Haemophilus influenzae, the first bacterial genome to be decoded, along with annotations of all the organism\u2019s genes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The moment electrified science. For the first time, researchers could see all the genetic components of a free-living organism, giving microbiologists a manual for bacterium\u2019s genetic tool kit. It also set off a race to sequence the genomes of known pathogens, with the aim of identifying their genetic arsenals and devising countermeasures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">His team next turned to the fruit fly genome to test whether their approach, known as a whole-genome shotgun sequencing, could work on its biggest target: the human genome. The fruit fly genome was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2000\/03\/24\/us\/on-road-to-human-genome-a-milestone-in-the-fruit-fly.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">successfully decoded in 2000<\/a>, providing a wealth of information that would help scientists study both the fly and human genomes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Decoding the human genome, Dr. Venter\u2019s next big challenge, became the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2000\/05\/07\/us\/rivals-on-offensive-as-they-near-wire-in-genome-race.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">focus of a competition<\/a> between his team at Celera against a consortium of academic rivals led by the United States and Britain. The National Institutes of Health, a major patron of the effort, refused to cooperate with Dr. Venter, who instead secured private funding from the Celera Corporation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Dr. Venter\u2019s whole genome shotgun method enabled him to erase his rivals\u2019 head start. With ample time and money, he might have seized this greatest of scientific prizes. Instead, he agreed, reluctantly, to accept the consortium\u2019s offer of a formal draw, with the trappings of a White House ceremony with President Bill Clinton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">For his contributions to sequencing the human genome, Dr. Venter received the Nierenberg Prize for Science in the Public Interest from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 2007. President Barack Obama presented him with the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/honorary-awards\/national-medal-science\/recipients\/j-craig-venter\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">National Medal of Science<\/a> in 2009.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Details on his survivors were not immediately available.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n7yjps etfikam0\">Jin Yu Young contributed reporting.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"J.
