He received one vote from Kentucky in the fourth ballot \u2014 making him the first Black person nominated for president.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1895:<\/strong> A Chicago Colts game against Cleveland was interrupted after the third inning so the <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-game-delayed-to-make-arr\/174918928\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">entire team could be arrested<\/a> for violating laws banning baseball games <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-almanac.com\/yearly\/yr1895n.shtml#:~:text=Before%20a%20game%20with%20the,and%20instigated%20the%20police%20action.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on Sunday<\/a>. While a West Side Grounds crowd of 10,000 fans waited, the players were marched into the clubhouse where they signed $100 bail bonds. (George Thompson\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1960:<\/strong> Ground was broken on a <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-united-airlines-turns-di\/155083106\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">51-acre site<\/a> in Elk Grove Village, which was just 5 miles away from O\u2019Hare International Airport, for United Airlines\u2019 headquarters and training schools.<\/p>\n<p>United remained at the location until its offices were moved in 2009 to <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-real-estate-turbulence-g\/174916142\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Willis Tower<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2022, CloudHQ\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/breaking\/ct-cloudhq-data-center-former-united-airlines-site-20220919-6ekr7gzapngo7khbr2zeysxbuu-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/breaking\/ct-cloudhq-data-center-former-united-airlines-site-20220919-6ekr7gzapngo7khbr2zeysxbuu-story.html\">began demolition<\/a>\u00a0of the former United Airlines corporate headquarters in Mount Prospect, with plans to build a $2.5 billion data center campus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1975:<\/strong> Chicago City Council passed <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-chicago-city-council-vot\/162672734\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cBurke\u2019s Law,\u201d<\/a> an ordinance proposed by former 14th Ward Ald. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/06\/24\/timeline-edward-burke-once-chicagos-longest-serving-alderman-convicted-on-13-of-14-counts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edward Burke<\/a> that outlawed nudity in massage parlors. When soccer\u2019s big names came to play<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>1976:<\/strong> The Chicago Sting beat the New York Cosmos, in front of 28,000 fans. (Charles Cherney\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1984:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2024\/06\/23\/chicago-cubs-ryne-sandberg-game\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cThe Sandberg Game.\u201d<\/a> Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg hit a pair of late-inning, game-tying home runs off St. Louis Cardinals closer Bruce Sutter in the Cubs\u2019 12-11, 11-inning win before a crowd of 38,079 at Wrigley Field. It signaled his rise to stardom \u2014 setting the second baseman on a course that would earn him the National League Most Valuable Player Award.<\/p>\n<p>The wild, comeback win gave notice to the rest of America that the 1984 Cubs were for real despite a 39-year World Series drought and not a single championship since 1908. That game ignited an unforgettable summer run that ended with a postseason collapse in San Diego, only one game shy of the World Series.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"FAJg5OOFbt\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/06\/02\/chicago-bears-soldier-field-stadium-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">What to know about the Chicago Bears\u2019 possible move to Arlington Heights \u2014 or a domed stadium on the lakefront<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>2000:<\/strong> Churchill Downs Inc. <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-racetracks-agree-to-merg\/174919930\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bought Arlington Park<\/a> for a reported $71 million.<\/p>\n<p>Arlington\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/suburbs\/arlington-heights\/ct-ahp-arlington-racecourse-closes-tl-0930-20210926-ydgat7qiwjc6pfsad6m444kuqq-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/suburbs\/arlington-heights\/ct-ahp-arlington-racecourse-closes-tl-0930-20210926-ydgat7qiwjc6pfsad6m444kuqq-story.html\">closed its gates<\/a> on Sept. 25, 2021.
