Nissans, Toyotas and Hondas were some of the car models targeted for their rims and tires, according to authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Police said that they found most of the stolen rims were sold online, and because the alleged thieves targeted less expensive vehicles, it made it easier to resell the merchandise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese defendants allegedly stole car parts in almost every precinct in the Bronx, as well as in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens,\u201d Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark told NY1.<\/p>\n<p>The NYPD formed a special unit in the Bronx in 2024 after hundreds of vehicles had rims or other car parts stolen, calling it Operation Pit Crew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were taking more than 200 reports every month; was not random. It was systematic, it was methodical, and it was calculated,\u201d NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.<\/p>\n<p>Officials said there was around $2 million in stolen property and damage to vehicles. Many of the alleged car thieves have been released without bail on monitored supervision and are due back in court, according to authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Tisch said there must be consequences and jail time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause, frankly, if there are not, we have all just wasted hell of a lot of time. And that would be unfortunate not only for the wasted time, but for the Bronx, who don\u2019t want their cars stolen anymore,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Clark said car manufacturers should start thinking about better anti-theft devices for rims.
