People with higher weight have already tried several times in their life to lose weight,\u201d he points out. \u201cThey have the expectation that following the doctor\u2019s advice will lead to better outcomes, but that can lead to more frustration and self-esteem issues when it doesn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Weight Loss From WH<strong data-node-id=\"11.0\">Why is weight loss not always \u201chealthy\u201d for someone?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">After being told by a doctor to lose weight, some people may be driven to diet or exercise in a way that\u2019s not healthy, Dr. Franco says. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">These folks may also get frustrated if their doctor tells them that tweaking their diet or exercising more will lead to weight loss\u2014especially when it doesn\u2019t happen or the results aren\u2019t sustained, says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.memorialcare.org\/providers\/mir-b-ali\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.memorialcare.org\/providers\/mir-b-ali\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Mir Ali\" data-node-id=\"13.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Mir Ali<\/a>, MD, medical director of MemorialCare Surgical Weight Loss Center at Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, CA. \u201cWhen you reach a certain weight, your body becomes resistant to losing more weight,\u201d Dr. Ali says. \u201cI\u2019ve seen patients get frustrated and say, \u2018I\u2019m only eating this much and I\u2019m not losing weight. I\u2019m trying to exercise.\u2019 We tell patients that it\u2019s not just about self-control. There are metabolic and hormonal changes that impact weight, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">And of course, Dr. Franco points out that a person\u2019s weight doesn\u2019t always correlate to how healthy they are. Ultimately, Dr. Franco and his fellow researchers concluded in the paper that \u201cacknowledging that weight alone might not give an adequate picture of someone\u2019s health, and recognizing the limitations of lifestyle interventions for weight loss, could pave the way for more effective and patient centered care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"16.0\">What are the most sustainable ways for higher weight people to maintain weight loss?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">If you have excess weight and haven\u2019t been able to lose it on your own, experts say it\u2019s a good idea to talk to a doctor to get some personalized advice. \u201cIt\u2019s very important that people try to pursue a healthy lifestyle that works for them,\u201d Dr. Franco says. \u201cPeople have different needs, and person-centric care is important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Dr. Franco says it\u2019s also crucial for doctors to talk about why someone may benefit from weight loss from a total-body health perspective vs. just giving blanket advice to lose weight. \u201cFor patients, it\u2019s important to find the right motivation,\u201d Dr. Franco says. That may mean knowing that weight loss could impact your heart health or even that you\u2019ll be able to be more mobile after losing weight, he says.  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"19\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">And Dr. Ali says patients shouldn\u2019t get discouraged if they want to lose weight and haven\u2019t been successful in the past. \u201cBy the time patients see me, they have tried all kinds of things and they\u2019re having no success. That\u2019s where we have to decide on what is the best intervention we can use,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"20\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">At the end of the day, it\u2019s crucial to frame weight and health in the context of your goals, per Dr. Franco. \u201cIf you want to be more active and agile, that might result in weight loss,\u201d he says. \u201cBut, in the end, it\u2019s not just about what you see in the mirror. It\u2019s how you feel about your body.
