Billy Bob Thornton and the cast of \u201cLandman\u201d<\/a> are opening up about why the Fort Worth-filmed series<\/a> is so popular.<\/p>\n

The show, co-created by Taylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace, returned for its 10-episode second season in November 2025 and aired weekly until mid-January. Over 9 million viewers tuned in for the season 2 premiere, a 262% increase from the first episode of season 1, according to Paramount+.<\/p>\n

Over the weekend, Thornton was joined by his \u201cLandman\u201d co-stars Sam Elliott and Andy Garcia and director Stephen Kay at a panel discussion for Deadline<\/a>.<\/p>\n

When asked why the show resonates with so many people, Thornton said he had believed it would be huge with viewers the middle of the country, but not the rest of the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t think the coasts would go for it,\u201d Thornton said. \u201cWe certainly didn\u2019t think it would become this huge international hit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Landman\u2019 cast on why the show is popular<\/p>\n

Thornton pointed to the show\u2019s characters being unabashedly themselves and honest.<\/p>\n

Normally, Sheridan-created shows have a vibe, and \u201cLandman\u201d has several, Thornton said. There\u2019s humor, emotion, drama, danger, absurdity and more.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the variety on it appeals to people,\u201d Thornton said.<\/p>\n

Elliott answered the question next with a smile and simply said, \u201cIt\u2019s a mystery to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Next up was Kay, who agreed with Thornton and additionally said that there\u2019s a lot of love in making the show that translates to the final product. Garcia noted that there\u2019s a shared respect for the character and material.<\/p>\n

Finally, Elliott chimed in with his real answer, saying that \u201cLandman\u201d is a reflection of what people would like to deal with day-to-day.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople that you want to be around, people you love, people that are decent to each other,\u201d he said. \u201cToday, more than any time, that\u2019s what we\u2019re all craving.\u201d<\/p>\n
