The Late Show with Colbert loses $40 to $50 million a year. They have a staff of 200 people,\u201d he said. \u201cLate night ratings are down across the board.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Portnoy attempted to explain the economics: \u201cIf one of my employees who I\u2019m paying $16 million a year while losing $40 million a year went on their show and was like, \u2018I don\u2019t like Dave. I don\u2019t trust Dave\u2019 \u2014\u00a0you know what I\u2019d do?\u201d he asked rhetorically. \u201cBuddy, you\u2019re losing $40 million a year, and then you have the arrogance to hammer your own company? What did you think was going to happen? Of course they\u2019d fire you. I\u2019d fire you in a f&#8212;ing heartbeat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Colbert used<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/articles\/stephen-colbert-announces-show-end-024248303.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:part of his July 14 monologue;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> part of his July 14 monologue<\/a> to blast Paramount\u2019s $16 million settlement with Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cBig, fat bribe,\u201d Colbert said on air. &#8220;As someone who has always been a proud employee of this network, I am offended. And I don\u2019t know if anything will ever repair my trust in this company. But just taking a stab at it, I\u2019d say $16 million would help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Those words now echo with extra weight, considering the show\u2019s sudden cancellation three days later. While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/cbs-staff-turmoil-over-trump-144953808.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:CBS maintains;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\">CBS maintains<\/a> the decision was strictly financial, others aren\u2019t so sure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Senator <strong>Elizabeth Warren<\/strong> tweeted that &#8220;America deserves to know if his show was canceled for political reasons,&#8221; while <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/07\/18\/stephen-colbert-show-cancelled-trump-paramount-democrats\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Bernie Sanders;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Bernie Sanders<\/a><\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cVFHYYU4tDU\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Adam Schiff;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><strong>Adam Schiff<\/strong><\/a> both raised questions about whether the firing was in response to Colbert\u2019s criticism of Trump and corporate influence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Trump, for his part, <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/media\/5408187-donald-trump-cbs-cancellation-late-show-stephen-colbert\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:celebrated;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">celebrated<\/a> the decision. \u201cI absolutely love that Colbert got fired,\u201d he wrote on Truth Social. \u201cHis talent was even less than his ratings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But Portnoy dismissed the outrage as political theater: \u201cThis isn\u2019t politics,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is called capitalism in the real world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Portnoy argued that the very structure of legacy media is outdated, noting that Barstool\u2019s own 200-person team produces over 30 shows, many of which draw larger audiences than Colbert.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI\u2019ve been on Rogan\u2019s podcast, <strong>Theo Von<\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/articles\/tim-mcgraw-officially-sends-direct-061917017.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Alex Cooper;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alex Cooper<\/a><\/strong>, all podcasts that are far more influential, reach way more people than late night at this day and age,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Still, The Late Show was reportedly the top-rated late-night show this past quarter and a consistent source of cultural and political commentary.
