Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy<\/a><\/strong> has his own take on why CBS decided that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert would end its run in May 2026.<\/p>\n

In the days after its host Stephen Colbert<\/a><\/strong>announced the news on-air, many called the move censorship \u2014\u00a0especially in light of Colbert\u2019s on-air criticism of CBS\u2019s parent company for settling a lawsuit with Donald Trump<\/a><\/strong> just days before.<\/p>\n

In a blunt video posted to X (formerly Twitter), Portnoy laid out his case.<\/p>\n

\u201cColbert makes $16 million a year. The Late Show with Colbert loses $40 to $50 million a year. They have a staff of 200 people,\u201d he said. \u201cLate night ratings are down across the board.\u201d<\/p>\n

Portnoy attempted to explain the economics: \u201cIf one of my employees who I\u2019m paying $16 million a year while losing $40 million a year went on their show and was like, \u2018I don\u2019t like Dave. I don\u2019t trust Dave\u2019 \u2014\u00a0you know what I\u2019d do?\u201d he asked rhetorically. \u201cBuddy, you\u2019re losing $40 million a year, and then you have the arrogance to hammer your own company? What did you think was going to happen? Of course they\u2019d fire you. I\u2019d fire you in a f—ing heartbeat.\u201d<\/p>\n

Colbert used part of his July 14 monologue<\/a> to blast Paramount\u2019s $16 million settlement with Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201cBig, fat bribe,\u201d Colbert said on air. “As someone who has always been a proud employee of this network, I am offended. And I don\u2019t know if anything will ever repair my trust in this company. But just taking a stab at it, I\u2019d say $16 million would help.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those words now echo with extra weight, considering the show\u2019s sudden cancellation three days later. While CBS maintains<\/a> the decision was strictly financial, others aren\u2019t so sure.<\/p>\n

Senator Elizabeth Warren<\/strong> tweeted that “America deserves to know if his show was canceled for political reasons,” while Bernie Sanders<\/a><\/strong> and Adam Schiff<\/strong><\/a> both raised questions about whether the firing was in response to Colbert\u2019s criticism of Trump and corporate influence.<\/p>\n

Trump, for his part, celebrated<\/a> the decision. \u201cI absolutely love that Colbert got fired,\u201d he wrote on Truth Social. \u201cHis talent was even less than his ratings.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Portnoy dismissed the outrage as political theater: \u201cThis isn\u2019t politics,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is called capitalism in the real world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Portnoy argued that the very structure of legacy media is outdated, noting that Barstool\u2019s own 200-person team produces over 30 shows, many of which draw larger audiences than Colbert.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been on Rogan\u2019s podcast, Theo Von<\/strong>, Alex Cooper<\/a><\/strong>, all podcasts that are far more influential, reach way more people than late night at this day and age,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Still, The Late Show was reportedly the top-rated late-night show this past quarter and a consistent source of cultural and political commentary. Colbert\u2019s defenders say canceling the show, especially after such a public rebuke of the network, sends a dangerous message.<\/p>\n

But Portnoy isn\u2019t swayed. \u201cYou\u2019re losing $40 million a year,\u201d he repeated. \u201cYou better shut up and be a good soldier and thank your lucky stars you still have a job.\u201d<\/p>\n
