Reservoirs, well water, and lake levels are low and mandatory restrictions come into play. \u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbtv.com\/weather\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wbtv.com\/weather\/\">several rounds of rain<\/a> are set to move over the Charlotte region, our the rainfall deficit remains high amid worsening drought conditions.<\/p>\n<p><b>What is the \u2018Low Inflow Protocol\u2019?<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The \u201cLow Inflow Protocol\u201d establishes water-reduction measures during periods of low inflow to the Catawba-Wateree basin, which provides drinking water to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbtv.com\/2026\/04\/18\/gastonia-urges-voluntary-water-conservation-after-stage-1-drought-declared-what-this-means\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wbtv.com\/2026\/04\/18\/gastonia-urges-voluntary-water-conservation-after-stage-1-drought-declared-what-this-means\/\">more than two million people<\/a> across 24 counties in North and South Carolina.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">In Stage 2, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charlottenc.gov\/water\/About-Us\/Drought-Resources\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.charlottenc.gov\/water\/About-Us\/Drought-Resources\">Charlotte Water<\/a> is asking residents to reduce non-essential water use to protect the region\u2019s water supply, specifically from the Catawba-Wateree basin. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">As of May 1, the basin entered Stage 2 of the five drought stages, triggering mandatory water restrictions instead of the previous voluntary restrictions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The goal of Stage 2 is to reduce overall water use by 5% to 10% to preserve reservoir storage, sustain downstream flow needs, and maintain drinking water availability across the basin until conditions improve. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Several regional counties have followed suit in implementing mandatory water restrictions,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbtv.com\/2026\/04\/28\/statesville-residents-react-impending-water-use-fines-amid-extreme-drought\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wbtv.com\/2026\/04\/28\/statesville-residents-react-impending-water-use-fines-amid-extreme-drought\/\"> including Iredell County<\/a>, while others remain under Stage 1 restrictions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/access\/monitoring\/climate-at-a-glance\/statewide\/mapping\/110\/pcp\/202603\/7\/rank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/access\/monitoring\/climate-at-a-glance\/statewide\/mapping\/110\/pcp\/202603\/7\/rank\" target=\"_blank\">Statewide maps show<\/a> North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia have seen record-dry conditions since September 2025, based on records dating back to 1895.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\"><b>Read more: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbtv.com\/2026\/04\/24\/charlotte-region-sees-driest-6-month-stretch-since-1971-officials-say\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wbtv.com\/2026\/04\/24\/charlotte-region-sees-driest-6-month-stretch-since-1971-officials-say\/\"><b>Charlotte region sees driest 6-month stretch since 1971, officials say<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 WBTV.
