In 2021, when the \u201cFraming Britney Spears\u201d<\/a> documentary dropped, most people were probably not likening the story to Jennifer Love Hewitt<\/a>\u2018s career. The overwhelming discourse Hewitt was subjected to in the late-\u201990s as a teen actress \u2014\u00a0in the middle of a string of hits including \u201cParty of Five,\u201d \u201cCan\u2019t Hardly Wait,\u201d and the original \u201cI Know What You Did Last Summer<\/a>\u201d \u2014 was so normalized at the time that no one questioned how it could have impacted the actress. Hewitt herself hadn\u2019t really seemed to think about it, either. But then she watched the Britney FX\/Hulu doc.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I started watching it, I was like,\u00a0\u2018Oh, they talked to me like that. Oh,’\u201d Hewitt said in an interview with Vulture<\/a>. \u201cI started crying for her. And then I realized I was crying for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201c911\u201d actress<\/a> went on to explain how the constant conversations in the press about her looks\u00a0have still affected her in waves over the years. She was 18 years old when \u201cI Know What You Did Last Summer\u201d was released in 1997. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt bothers me more now than it did at that age because I was in it,\u201d she reflected. \u201cBefore I even knew what sex was, I was a sex symbol. I still don\u2019t know that I have that fully defined for myself because it started so weird.\u201d<\/p>\n

When it comes to the kind of scrutiny that media obsessions like Spears endured in the tabloids, Hewitt decided that staying out of the public eye made the most sense for her career. The actress even said that she didn\u2019t sip alcohol until she was 25. <\/p>\n

Ultimately, Hewitt decided to use her work as a way of hitting back at anyone who tried to frame her body as the center of a conversation. \u201cI really wanted to be a good actor, and I was trying to give to the people watching. I was trying to outact the conversation around my body,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

Heading into the new franchise reboot film<\/a>, Hewitt realized she was coming at the project from a completely different perspective \u2014\u00a0that of a veteran who is more than twice the age she was when the first film was released. It is a \u201cbaton passing\u201d for Hewitt, who was at the opposite end of a similar experience with Sigourney Weaver when they co-starred together in the 2001 film \u201cHeartbreakers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a moment when we were talking about being the ing\u00e9nue and then realizing you\u2019re not the young girl on the set anymore \u2014 you\u2019re the older version of that girl. Sigourney was like, \u2018You\u2019re going to look back and you\u2019re going to remember that, right now, you\u2019re the ing\u00e9nue and then you\u2019re going to pass that baton to somebody,’\u201d Hewitt recalled. She went on to share something that she told the new \u201cI Know What You Did Last Summer\u201d<\/a> actress Chase Sui Wonders, saying, \u201cI\u2019m having this moment, and I\u2019ve got to tell you about it. In my mind, I still feel like I am the ing\u00e9nue, but I\u2019m not.
