{"id":767339,"date":"2026-05-02T03:37:24","date_gmt":"2026-05-02T03:37:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/767339\/"},"modified":"2026-05-02T03:37:24","modified_gmt":"2026-05-02T03:37:24","slug":"dementia-popular-supplement-linked-to-slower-brain-repair-raises-dementia-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/767339\/","title":{"rendered":"Dementia: Popular supplement linked to slower brain repair raises dementia concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fish oil has been hailed as one of the best supplements for brain health, but new findings have called this widely held belief into question.<\/p>\n<p>The compound has previously been recognised for its ability to reduce inflammation, positioning it as a key player in the fight against cardiovascular disease.<\/p>\n<p>And while scientific evidence has repeatedly suggested it is one of the most important components of a healthy diet, evidence for the benefits of taking supplements has been less conclusive.<\/p>\n<p>The latest body of research looking at the neurovascular system has suggested that fish supplements could do more harm than good for certain people.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"166dc\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"31d445b26eb0a8e90c8716537a0a4e08\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%201200%20800'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/supplements.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" alt=\"SUPPLEMENTS\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Fish oil has long been lauded for its anti-inflammatory effects<\/p>\n<p> | <\/p>\n<p>GETTY<\/p>\n<p>Lead author Onder Albayram, PhD, neuroscientist and associate professor at the Medical University of South Carolina and a member of the National Trauma Society Committee, said: \u201cFish oil supplements are everywhere, and people take them for a range of reasons, often without a clear understanding of their long-term effects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe still don\u2019t know whether the brain has resilience or resistance to this supplement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The findings, published in Cell Reports, suggest a specific chemical compound known as EPA could disrupt the brain\u2019s healing process after an injury.<\/p>\n<p>More specifically, it appeared to make the walls of the brain\u2019s blood vessels less stable, presenting a challenge for blood vessels that need to repair themselves following an injury.<\/p>\n<p>Fish oil disrupts repair signals put out by the brain after physical trauma, the researchers noted. <\/p>\n<p>They also discovered a link between the supplement and a build-up of tau protein, which is linked to brain illnesses.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"203e6\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"f012399aac72145d83efce18db927dbc\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%201200%20800'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/brain-scan.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" alt=\"Brain scan\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Fish oil may disrupt the repair process of the blood vessels in the brain<\/p>\n<p> | <\/p>\n<p>GETTY<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s worth noting that the effects were observed in mice, meaning further research is needed to establish what the impact would be on people.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, scientists focused on cases of \u201crepeated mild head injuries\u201d.
