{"id":768175,"date":"2026-05-02T12:45:42","date_gmt":"2026-05-02T12:45:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/768175\/"},"modified":"2026-05-02T12:45:42","modified_gmt":"2026-05-02T12:45:42","slug":"human-biohazard-camps-outside-historic-east-village-church","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/768175\/","title":{"rendered":"Human biohazard camps outside historic East Village church"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A homeless man in the East Village has everyone around him saying \u2018pew.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Neighbors are calling the vagrant \u2014 who apparently has <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2015\/07\/12\/peeing-menace-cuffed-by-cops-only-to-be-back-on-the-streets\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">no control of his bodily functions<\/a> and has decamped on the stoops of an abandoned historic church on East 7th Street \u2014 the smelliest man in NYC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s always rats and homeless people there, but the odor has never been so pungent as to make me gag from the middle of the block,\u201d said Raf Astor, a longtime East Village resident, who first came upon <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/07\/14\/nyc-odor-complaints-reach-disgusting-all-time-high\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the putrid scene<\/a> 10 days ago.<\/p>\n<p>The man has been wandering between the abandoned church and the park over the past 10 days. Leonardo Munoz for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when nabe noses first detected the unidentified man on the steps of the former First Hungarian Reformed Church in a pool of liquified poo. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I approached, I noticed what seemed to be brown and red liquid dropping down his leg and forming a puddle under one of the legs of his pants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Residents have been avoiding the block since, calling it a biohazard, they told The Post. <\/p>\n<p>Over the past few days, the man was seen limping towards Tompkins Square Park, the stench following him.<\/p>\n<p>The Post spotted the man Friday snoozing on a park bench, flies circling, as passersby covered their noses and mouths.<\/p>\n<p>Despite his obvious need for medical attention, authorities seem at a loss for what to do.<\/p>\n<p>The Post spotted the man Friday snoozing on a park bench, flies circling the poo-covered pants. Leonardo Munoz for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>Neighbors called 911 twice, but the man refused care when an ambulance was dispatched, a FDNY spokesperson told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s been more than a dozen 311 complaints in the past week alone for <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2017\/10\/30\/commuters-are-fed-up-with-homeless-mans-stinky-trash\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">homeless person assistance<\/a> or encampments but the cases have all been closed with no apparent action, according to records.<\/p>\n<p>The owner of the tattoo parlor next door told The Post he made one of those calls. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStart your day with all you need to know\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMorning Report delivers the latest news, videos, photos and more.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople from the city came, they walked up the street to look for him but they didn\u2019t see him. So they left,\u201d said \u201cSway.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>He removed the bench normally outside his shop in the hopes of discouraging the man from sleeping there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe smell is so bad, and all the businesses \u2013 we had to clean up after him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s been more than a dozen 311 complaints in the past week alone, and at least two 911 calls. Leonardo Munoz for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>The city\u2019s Department of Homeless Services claimed it was closely monitoring the location, which has been abandoned since the pandemic. The city\u2019s Landmark Preservation Commission recently approved its conversion into residential units.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOutreach workers accompanied by clinicians will continue to canvass this area to engage any vulnerable New Yorker they encounter and make connections to shelter and services that meet their unique needs,\u201d a spokesperson told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>Under state law, treatment can\u2019t be given without consent, unless there is a medical emergency.
