{"id":769422,"date":"2026-05-03T01:47:20","date_gmt":"2026-05-03T01:47:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/769422\/"},"modified":"2026-05-03T01:47:20","modified_gmt":"2026-05-03T01:47:20","slug":"new-school-strips-funding-for-hillel-chapter-alleging-ties-to-international-law-violations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/769422\/","title":{"rendered":"New School strips funding for Hillel chapter, alleging ties to international law violations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Students at NYC\u2019s woke New School voted to strip funding for its campus Hillel chapter \u2014\u00a0\u00a0an unprecedented move critics ripped as \u201cdespicable\u201d and school officials insisted\u00a0 was unauthorized.<\/p>\n<p>The Greenwich Village university is the first in the country\u00a0where students\u00a0vote\u00a0to end financial ties to the group, claiming without evidence Hillel is connected to \u201cgrave violations of international law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 22-member student senate made the move Friday by majority vote, boasting it was a \u201clandmark decision\u201d to declare Hillel \u201cnot in good standing,\u201d\u00a0citing its connection to the Israeli Defense Forces through student trips to Israel.<\/p>\n<p>The student senate took issue with Hillel\u2019s student trips to Israel. RSO Compliance Committee<\/p>\n<p>Hillel is an international Jewish student hub with chapters at 850 colleges in the United States, that serves as gathering places for Jewish students to socialize, worship and observe religious holidays.<\/p>\n<p>In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1FBxET_gIkCkx13fpLbL3xl-_OPDkX2RqMSv3Z-H54eI\/edit?tab=t.0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">38-page report<\/a>, the student government alleged Hillel\u2019s participation in programs that send students to volunteer on military bases in Israel makes the entire student body complicit,\u00a0through\u00a0fees taken from tuition to fund all student groups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo continue to fund Hillel at the New School would mean that your student fees would be used to support violations of international law,\u201d the statement says. \u201cOur shared values require us to enforce our policies until Hillel agrees to affirm and abide by international law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report also complained that Hillel, through its participation in the Birthright Israel program, allows students to tour and participate in recreational activities in occupied territories, including\u00a0jeeping\u00a0in the\u00a0Golan Heights.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Later Saturday, the school told The Post\u00a0 the student senate didn\u2019t have the authority to revoke funding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe student senate does not have the authority to determine the recognition, funding eligibility, or official status of registered student organizations. That authority rests with university administration,\u201d a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>The student government slammed programs that send students to volunteer on military bases in Israel. Instagram\/hillelatbaruch<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur Hillel chapter remains, as it always has been, in good standing, eligible for funding, and supporting Jewish life at The New School.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t immediately clear what, if any disciplinary action the school would take action against the senate students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHillel is not a political organization,\u201d said Mark\u00a0Treyger, CEO of the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, who called the students\u2019 vote\u00a0\u201cdisgraceful and dangerous.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo target Hillel is to target Jewish identity and Jewish belonging on campus,\u201d he continued.\u201dJewish students should not be forced to justify their identity, heritage, or communal spaces in order to participate in campus life. I hear the school has trouble with enrollment of new students\u2026 wonder why! Goodluck with donations and enrollment. Jokes on you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The liberal private Manhattan university is the first school to cut funding for its Hillel chapters. Instagram\/hillelatbaruch<\/p>\n<p>Hillel International CEO and President Adam Lehman vowed Jewish students would not be denied a Hillel chapter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemonizing Hillel with false charges rooted in age-old antisemitic tropes is wrong, plain and simple,\u201d Lehman said.<\/p>\n<p>Hillel serves a population of 700 Jewish students at The New School.
