(ABC News: Charlie McLean)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said the project would help insure Australia against the effects of being at the end of a global supply chain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;And that&#8217;s why our focus is on making sure that right the way through the supply chain we do everything we can to increase our ability as a state and nation to drill, refine and store our own fuel.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Crisafulli also repeated calls for the federal government to scrap a 2025 decision to ban fossil fuel projects from the national interest exemption under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Act.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-04-08\/taroom-trough-fast-track-queensland\/106540376\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Qld premier says federal government should fast-track oil projects<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Queensland Premier David Crisafulli wants the federal government to fast-track environmental approvals for oil projects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Everyone we speak with tells us that the greatest impediment [to drilling] right now is that extra layer as part of the EPBC, which single-handedly added fossil fuels, and it happened late last year,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;And we&#8217;re asking the Commonwealth to remove that, and that would give the greatest signal to the market that these projects can occur.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Deputy Premier and minister for state development Jarrod Bleijie said the plan was similar to the Land Activation Program, intended to unlock land for housing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The Queensland government, the taxpayers, own vast amounts of land across the state and it has been utilised as it should be for years,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;This is about partnering with the private sector, and we&#8217;re serious about it. We&#8217;re getting on with the job.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Plan won&#8217;t provide instant relief, opposition says<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Opposition Leader Steven Miles said he welcomed government initiatives to improve the state&#8217;s fuel security over the next decade, but criticised what he called &#8220;another David Crisafulli photo op&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Queenslanders are struggling to fill their fuel tank right now.
