(Charles Osgood\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1973:<\/strong>\u00a0Ironworkers bolted the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/04\/28\/building-goliath-the-making-of-the-sears-tower\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">last girder<\/a> into place, making\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/04\/30\/willis-tower-is-no-longer-the-tallest-building-in-the-world-but-its-still-a-trendsetter-as-it-turns-50-this-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/enews.chicagotribune.com\/q\/YmEJ5XbVsEy0YVQlDEPy4IvC5AZ_MIPslpmOZcOJa2pydW1vcmVAZ21haWwuY29tw4gJUwK5qFLe5GLwkqrHrRmzKiVICg&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1746280553056000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0tZdjEs51PhEVIjT1tqC4V\">Sears Tower<\/a> (now Willis Tower) the world\u2019s tallest building. Sears Tower ended the Empire State Building\u2019s four-decade reign as the world\u2019s tallest and transformed the West Loop into a glittering office corridor.<\/p>\n<p>The 1,451-foot Willis Tower lost its crown as the world\u2019s tallest when it was surpassed in 1996 by Malaysia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-sears-tower-doesnt-end\/171540647\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Petronas Towers<\/a>, and the American title in 2013 when New York City\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2013\/11\/12\/tallest-building-ruling-willis-tower-loses-to-one-world-trade-center-2\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">One World Trade Center<\/a> was completed. (Scott Strazzante\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2009:<\/strong> The Chicago Cubs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2009\/05\/04\/an-honor-they-earned\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">retired<\/a> the No. 31 jersey worn by Hall of Fame pitchers <a href=\"https:\/\/baseballhall.org\/hall-of-famers\/jenkins-ferguson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fergie Jenkins<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/baseballhall.org\/hall-of-famers\/maddux-greg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Greg Maddux<\/a> at Wrigley Field.<\/p>\n<p>If Jenkins had his druthers, he\u2019d have worn No. 30 when he joined the Cubs after a trade with Philadelphia in 1966.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"ScEa6Bxfvc\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2022\/05\/20\/column-fergie-jenkins-soaks-up-the-adoration-as-the-chicago-cubs-unveil-his-statue-outside-wrigley-field\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Column: Fergie Jenkins soaks up the adoration as the Chicago Cubs unveil his statue outside Wrigley Field<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThat was my number with the Phillies, but Yosh Kawano informed me that was Mr. Ken Holtzman\u2019s number,\u201d Jenkins recalled. \u201cHe offered me 31, and I said, \u2018Fine.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kawano, the colorful longtime potentate of the Cubs clubhouse, was still around when Maddux showed up 20 years later.
