Those ticket sales tower above the original, which launched to $27.5 million domestically in 2006. They also rank as the fourth-best start of the year, behind \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/michael\/\" id=\"auto-tag_michael\" data-tag=\"michael\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michael<\/a>\u201d ($97.5 million), \u201cThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie\u201d ($131 million) and \u201cProject Hail Mary\u201d ($80 million).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cPrada 2\u201d racked up another $156.6 million at the international box office, bringing global ticket sales to $233.6 million for the weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDisney\u2019s 20th Century Studios spent lavishly on the sequel, which was produced for roughly $100 million, not including the worldwide marketing budget. To compare, the first film carried a price tag of around $40 million, not adjusted for inflation. Director David Frankel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/29\/movies\/devil-wears-prada-meryl-streep-anne-hathaway.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/29\/movies\/devil-wears-prada-meryl-streep-anne-hathaway.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">told the New York Times<\/a> the sequel\u2019s budget \u201cmostly went to [the cast].\u201d Already, the studio\u2019s investment in more \u201cPrada\u201d is proving to be money well spent; the second film is poised to outgross the original\u2019s lifetime haul in a matter of weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cVery few dramedies do this kind of business once, let alone a second time that\u2019s bigger,\u201d says David A. Gross, who publishes the box office newsletter FranchiseRe. \u201cAudiences, mostly female, can\u2019t get enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLauren Weisberg\u2019s 2003 novel, a roman \u00e0 clef about working as an assistant to Vogue boss Anna Wintour, was the basis of the first film. The follow-up, which brought back the original director Frankel and screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna, picks up two decades later as Anne Hathaway\u2019s Andy Sachs returns to Runway magazine as a features editor under Meryl Streep\u2019s powerful editor-in-chief, Miranda Priestly. Reviews were mixed, but audiences were more receptive and awarded it an \u201cA-\u201c grade on CinemaScore exit polls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe Devil Wears Prada 2\u2033 benefitted from nostalgia as well as the excitement of the original cast \u2014 Streep, Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci \u2014 returning to their beloved roles after 20 years. The first film, a commercial success with $326 million globally, has remained a generation-spanning cultural touchstone. That\u2019s thanks in part to endlessly quotable lines like \u201cgird your loins!\u201d and \u201cby all means, move at a glacial pace\u201d and one withering monologue about a cerulean-colored sweater.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI never had any idea that my lines would get quoted to me every single week of my life since the movie has come out,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2016\/film\/features\/the-devil-wears-prada-turns-10-meryl-streep-anne-hathaway-and-emily-blunt-tell-all-1201802311\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2016\/film\/features\/the-devil-wears-prada-turns-10-meryl-streep-anne-hathaway-and-emily-blunt-tell-all-1201802311\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Blunt told Variety when \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada\u201d turned 10.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe Devil Wears Prada 2\u201d was this weekend\u2019s only major new release, so holdover titles rounded out the rest of the box office charts. Second place went to \u201cMichael\u201d with a massive $54 million in its second weekend, down just 44% from its debut. Lionsgate\u2019s musical biopic about Michael Jackson has been a major draw with $183.8 million in North America and $423 million globally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tUniversal\u2019s animated \u201cThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie\u201d landed in third place with $12.1 million. After four weekends of release, the family film has earned $402.67 million domestically and more than $900 million globally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cProject Hail Mary\u201d was No. 4 with $8.5 million, another solid hold for the space epic in its seventh weekend of release. So far, the Ryan Gosling-led blockbuster has generated $318 million in North America and $638.4 million worldwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAlso new to theaters is Neon\u2019s indie thriller \u201cHokum,\u201d which debuted in fifth place with $6.4 million from 1,855 theaters. Adam Scott stars as a writer who travels to an Irish inn to spread the ashes of his parents, unaware that the estate is haunted by an ancient evil. The film earned a \u201cB\u201d grade on CinemaScore, which is strong for the horror genre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cAudiences are generally in some state of agitation at the end of a horror movie,\u201d Gross adds. \u201cSo a B score is excellent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201dAnimal Farm,\u201d this weekend\u2019s final newcomer, opened at No. 6 with $3.3 million.
