{"id":770802,"date":"2026-05-03T17:01:47","date_gmt":"2026-05-03T17:01:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/770802\/"},"modified":"2026-05-03T17:01:47","modified_gmt":"2026-05-03T17:01:47","slug":"nothing-is-superfluous-in-the-root-holiday-cabin-by-kasawoo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/770802\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Nothing is superfluous&#8221; in The Root holiday cabin by Kasawoo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>London architecture studio Kasawoo has created The Root, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/prefabricated-buildings\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prefabricated<\/a> holiday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/cabins\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cabin<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/greece\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Greece<\/a>, clad in deep-red timber planks and designed to be relocatable.<\/p>\n<p>Surrounded by olive groves, the 20-square-metre cabin sits on a site in Zakynthos that has been in the family of <a href=\"https:\/\/kasawoo.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kasawoo<\/a> co-founder Katie Kasabalis for decades, alongside the ruins of her grandmother&#8217;s old stone house.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2322793 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/the-root-cabin-kasawoo-architecture-residential-greece_dezeen_2364_col_49-852x682.jpg\" alt=\"The Root by Kasawoo\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1891\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Kasawoo has created The Root cabin<\/p>\n<p>According to Kasabalis and fellow co-founder Darius Woo, The Root was designed to propose a &#8220;different kind of luxury&#8221; for the area, where they said holiday homes are typically housed within &#8220;sprawling concrete&#8221; structures.<\/p>\n<p>The road-legal and relocatable cabin was instead designed to contain only what was necessary and was entirely prefabricated in Romania before being transported to the site.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2322770 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/the-root-cabin-kasawoo-architecture-residential-greece_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Old stone house and cabin in Greece\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>It sits alongside the ruins of an old stone house<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We deliberately avoided the language of high-design holiday villas that dominate places like Mykonos or Santorini,&#8221; Kasabalis and Woo told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While we admire their material richness, that kind of spectacle wasn&#8217;t what this project was about,&#8221; they continued.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2322775 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/the-root-cabin-kasawoo-architecture-residential-greece_dezeen_2364_col_12-852x682.jpg\" alt=\"The Root by Kasawoo\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1891\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The cabin was prefabricated<\/p>\n<p>Kasabalis and Woo added that, instead, &#8220;the project&#8217;s generosity lies in what it refuses to add&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nothing is superfluous. Built-in furniture maximises the compact interior, while passive strategies such as natural cross-ventilation and careful orientation enhance comfort without mechanical excess,&#8221; the duo continued.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Root demonstrates that small-scale architecture can do more with less: preserve fragile sites, connect past and present, and propose a different kind of luxury \u2013 one defined not by size, but by clarity, care, and a gentle dialogue with the land.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2322777 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/the-root-cabin-kasawoo-architecture-residential-greece_dezeen_2364_col_16-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Red-timber cabin\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A deck was built around the mobile structure<\/p>\n<p>The deep shade of red used for the timber exterior and metal window frames of The Root was informed by a similar shade found in historic villas in Zakynthos, while the twisted roof was intended to &#8220;echo the mountainous horizon&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, the cabin is divided along its length into four sections, two metres wide, which contain a sleeping area, a kitchen and a bathroom on either side of a flexible entrance space.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2322785 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/the-root-cabin-kasawoo-architecture-residential-greece_dezeen_2364_col_30-852x852.jpg\" alt=\"The Root by Kasawoo\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The red exterior contrasts with a plywood-lined interior<\/p>\n<p>The red exterior is contrasted by a lining of exposed plywood, which was also used for the cabin&#8217;s built-in furniture, including kitchen cabinets, storage under the bed, a sofa and bookshelves.<\/p>\n<p>An unexpected pop of colour is found in the bathroom, which is lined with blue finishes to create what the studio described as &#8220;an otherworldly atmosphere&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/01\/25\/the-oculous-cabin-hayley-pryor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/the-oculus-hayley-pryor-cabin-movable-architecture-australia_dezeen_2364_sq-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"The Oculus by Hayley Pryor\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Australian sheds inform compact mobile cabin by Hayley Pryor\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Because the exterior already had such a strong presence, we wanted the interior to feel calm and warm,&#8221; Kasabalis and Woo said. &#8220;Rather than using plain white, we chose finished plywood for its softness, simplicity, and natural character.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For the bathroom, we introduced blue as a deliberate contrast. It creates an almost otherworldly atmosphere \u2013 like stepping into a different space within the cabin,&#8221; they added.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2322791 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/the-root-cabin-kasawoo-architecture-residential-greece_dezeen_2364_col_44-852x1278.jpg\" alt=\"Blue bathroom\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The blue bathroom is designed to feel &#8220;otherworldly&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sliding doors sheltered by timber shutters open the cabin onto elevated timber decks on either side, which effectively double its footprint while ensuring minimal impact on the site.<\/p>\n<p>If The Root is ever required to be relocated, it can be mounted onto a trailer and driven by truck.
