JACKSONVILLE, Fla.<\/strong> \u2013 At an age when most teens are just starting high school, 14-year-old Elin Facey is preparing to graduate with her diploma \u2014 and already planning her next step: college.<\/p>\n

Facey, a Jacksonville student, accelerated through her coursework by completing Florida Virtual School Flex classes and homeschooling, skipping five grade levels in less than two years.<\/p>\n

Her path wasn\u2019t always smooth.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis whole journey started when I was in sixth grade,\u201d Facey said. \u201cI was failing because I didn\u2019t have motivation. My mom pulled me aside \u2026 and that\u2019s when things changed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her mother, Deidra Facey, said that moment marked a turning point for the family.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were up day and night, sometimes 1 a.m.,\u201d she said. \u201cShe had that drive, and I just kept motivating her \u2014 telling her, \u2018You can do it.\u2019 And she did.\u201d<\/p>\n

Facey said the transition to accelerated learning wasn\u2019t easy at first, but it helped her recognize her potential.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt first it was difficult, but once I got used to it, I realized I had a lot more in me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Along the way, she reached milestones years ahead of schedule \u2014 including taking the ACT at 13 years old. She said being in a testing room with older students was intimidating but ultimately a positive experience.<\/p>\n

Now 14, Facey has received more than 90 college acceptance letters and has decided to attend Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama. She plans to begin her studies online before transitioning to in-person classes in the coming years.<\/p>\n

Despite the academic pace, her mother said maintaining balance remained a priority.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe made sure she still had time to be a kid,\u201d Deidra Facey said. \u201cWe took trips, she spent time with friends, and stayed involved in church.\u201d<\/p>\n

Facey said one of the biggest sacrifices along the way has been growing up faster than her peers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had to mature quicker,\u201d she said. \u201cBut it helped me realize there\u2019s more to life, and it made me stronger.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, she hopes to pursue a career combining law and real estate.<\/p>\n

She also has a message for other students.<\/p>\n

\u201cStay focused,\u201d Facey said. \u201cDon\u2019t let distractions or other people hold you back. Believe in yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n
