{"id":77223,"date":"2025-07-20T05:28:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-20T05:28:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/77223\/"},"modified":"2025-07-20T05:28:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-20T05:28:09","slug":"wnba-all-stars-make-statement-with-warmup-shirts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/77223\/","title":{"rendered":"WNBA All-Stars make statement with warmup shirts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>INDIANAPOLIS (AP) \u2014 The WNBA All-Stars wanted to send a clear message to the league on the game\u2019s brightest stage.<\/p>\n<p>All of the players on Team Clark and Team Collier warmed up for Saturday night\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/wnba-all-star-clark-collier-9106a268000a103447b06f727af57afa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WNBA All-Star Game<\/a> in shirts that read \u201cPay us what you owe us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe get a very tiny percentage of all the money that\u2019s made through the WNBA, which obviously is made through the entertainment we provide,\u201d said Napheesa Collier on the decision to wear the shirts. \u201cSo we want a fair and reasonable percentage of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The idea was hatched Saturday morning at a players meeting. <\/p>\n<p>The demonstration comes after the players and the league failed to reach a new collective bargaining agreement at <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cba-wnba-all-star-f739c8d4adac599f807286374aa90e17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an in-person meeting Thursday<\/a>. The league\u2019s players opted out of their last CBA in October, and are looking for a better revenue-sharing model, increased salaries, improved benefits and a softer salary cap.<\/p>\n<p>After the failed negotiations, many players said there was a large discrepancy between what they wanted and what the league was offering. If a new CBA is not reached by October some players, including All-Stars Napheesa Collier and Angel Reese, have mentioned the potential of a walkout.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the game, chants of \u201cPay them!\u201d broke out in the arena. Some fans held signs that read \u201cPay the players,\u201d during the game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had no idea that they were in solidarity with our demonstration,\u201d said Nneka Ogwumike, president of the WNBPA. \u201cI\u2019ve been hearing it all weekend at the fan events, supporting us and wanting us to get our fair share of the value.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This was potentially the last time that so many players would be together in one place before the season ends \u2014 a fact not lost on the union leadership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a perfect opportunity to raise awareness for what we\u2019re doing and do it together,\u201d Collier said.<\/p>\n<p>The players aren\u2019t decided whether they\u2019ll wear the shirts on their own teams over the course of the second half of the season which begins Tuesday.
