{"id":772315,"date":"2026-05-04T09:52:14","date_gmt":"2026-05-04T09:52:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/772315\/"},"modified":"2026-05-04T09:52:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-04T09:52:14","slug":"chop-doctors-identify-barriers-to-glp-1-drugs-for-obese-kids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/772315\/","title":{"rendered":"CHOP doctors identify barriers to GLP-1 drugs for obese kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From Philly and the Pa. suburbs to South Jersey and Delaware, what would you like WHYY News to cover? <a href=\"#Section1\">Let us know!<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Rachana Shah\u2019s patients are children, but some have developed health issues that are usually prevalent in older people: sleep apnea, joint pain or pre-diabetes.\n<\/p>\n<p>As a pediatric endocrinologist at Children\u2019s Hospital of Philadelphia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chop.edu\/centers-programs\/health-well-being-clinic\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Health and Well-being Clinic<\/a>, many of Shah\u2019s young patients have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chop.edu\/conditions-diseases\/obesity\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">obesity<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>The overall impact of obesity makes it important to start treating it early, she said.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPediatric obesity is a predictor of obesity in adulthood, and can lead to many different metabolic and other organ system diseases,\u201d she said. \u201cWatching and waiting for years or decades is not the right approach.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Early approaches to treatment always start with helping kids and their families make changes to eating habits, physical exercise and other lifestyle factors like screen time, mental health and sleep.\n<\/p>\n<p>But those steps alone may not help some children reach a healthy weight, Shah said, as things like genetics, hormones and changes in the brain, gut and liver can affect appetite and weight regulation.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, when we are seeing that these health behavior or lifestyle changes are not having an impact, and particularly when we\u2019re already starting to see pre-diabetes, sleep apnea \u2026 it\u2019s even more urgent to think about expanding our approach beyond just continuing the nutrition and exercise,\u201d she said.\n<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when medications may come in. Use of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, known as GLP-1s, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/04\/01\/1166781510\/ozempic-weight-loss-drug-big-business\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">skyrocketed among adults<\/a>, but they\u2019ve only been approved for children in the last several years.\n<\/p>\n<p>Experts say these drugs could be a <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article\/155\/4\/e2024068119\/201159\/GLP-1-Receptor-Agonists-in-Pediatric-and\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">useful tool<\/a> in fighting a <a href=\"https:\/\/hpi.georgetown.edu\/obesity\/#:~:text=Almost%2014%20million%20children%20%E2%80%94%2024,often%20remain%20obese%20in%20adulthood.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">growing epidemic<\/a> of childhood obesity, and the number of adolescents taking medications has <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/2819128?resultClick=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sharply increased<\/a> nationally. Still, CHOP researchers found that <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article-abstract\/157\/4\/e2025074094\/206752\/Characteristics-of-Youth-Treated-With-GLP-1RAs-at?redirectedFrom=fulltext\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">only a fraction<\/a> of eligible kids ultimately get a GLP-1 prescription.
