{"id":772497,"date":"2026-05-04T11:49:15","date_gmt":"2026-05-04T11:49:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/772497\/"},"modified":"2026-05-04T11:49:15","modified_gmt":"2026-05-04T11:49:15","slug":"the-met-puts-its-chagalls-up-for-sale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/772497\/","title":{"rendered":"The Met puts its Chagalls up for sale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>norman lebrecht<\/p>\n<p>May 04, 2026<\/p>\n<p>Artsworld sources are reporting that Sothebys have been given the go-ahead to sell two Marc Chagall murals at the Metropolitan Operas, under certain conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The murals, commissioned for the new Met building in 1966, are valued by Sotheby\u2019s at $55 million.<\/p>\n<p>The sale has not yet been flagged on the Sotheby\u2019s website, where 12 other Chagall works are presently up for auction. The conditions are incontrovertible.<\/p>\n<p>Any prospective buyer will be required to agree to leave the paintings in place during the opera season.
