(Getty Images) <\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">Those taking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/ozempics-health-benefits-keep-growing-risks-worth-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1)<\/a> medications for diabetes and weight loss often experience gastrointestinal symptoms \u2013 but some lesser-known side effects have also been reported.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">One of those, described as &#8220;Ozempic breath,&#8221; refers to &#8220;a fishy smell in burps or bad breath,&#8221; Neha Lalani, MD, an endocrinologist based in Lakeway, Texas, told Healthline.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">Bad breath (clinically known as halitosis) is not included in the listed side effects for popular semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Monjouro, Zepbound) medications.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">This potential side effect appears to be shaping consumers\u2019 spending habits. The Hershey CEO recently shared during an earnings call that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/ozempic-users-report-surprising-cravings-certain-smells-heres-what-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">popularity of GLP-1 drugs<\/a> has led to people purchasing gum and mint products to freshen their breath, per reports.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">There is currently no peer-reviewed research confirming that these medications cause bad breath or explaining a clear mechanism behind it.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">Even so, numerous users have shared their experience with &#8220;Ozempic breath&#8221; on social media.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/popular-weight-loss-medications-linked-hidden-side-effects-study-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>POPULAR WEIGHT-LOSS MEDICATIONS LINKED TO HIDDEN SIDE EFFECTS, STUDY FINDS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">&#8220;This is mortifying lol. I even brushed my teeth and gargled with mouthwash and I&#8217;m [still] smelling it. It literally smells like a dirty drain or sewage,&#8221; one user shared.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">&#8220;I feel like I need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/ozempic-ruining-your-teeth-what-know-about-impact-dental-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">brush my teeth<\/a> all the time. The sulfur burps were temporary but DISGUSTING,&#8221; another person wrote.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">Dr. Sue Decotiis, a New York City-based physician specializing in medical weight loss and hormone optimization, confirmed that bad breath can result from dehydration, gastric reflux, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/healthy-living\/medications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">medication side effects<\/a> and unhealthy gut flora.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">&#8220;Even at moderate doses, GLP medications require about a gallon of still water daily to support fat metabolism and maintain proper hydration,&#8221; she told Fox News Digital. &#8220;Very few patients do this or are advised to do so.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">&#8220;A well-balanced probiotic containing multiple species may be helpful, especially if reflux persists,&#8221; Decotiis advised. &#8220;Additionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/patients-taking-weight-loss-drugs-often-make-5-critical-mistakes-doctor-warns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">adequate protein and fiber intake<\/a> support gastrointestinal health and promote a healthy gut microbiome.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">Some users did share tips that seemed to help curb the issue.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">&#8220;My mouth feels, tastes and smells better when I\u2019m constantly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/science\/planet-earth\/water\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">drinking water<\/a>,&#8221; one person shared on Reddit.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">&#8220;Cut out greasy food from your daily diet. Most processed food too, if possible. And it should go away,&#8221; another user recommended.
