Mayor Zohran Mamdani leads the list of local political figures who won\u2019t be worrying about what to wear for Monday night\u2019s Met Gala<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Mayor framed his decision to sit out the event as part of keeping a focus on \u201caffordability and making the most expensive city in the United States affordable,\u201d in an interview<\/a> with Hellgate last month.<\/p>\n

On Monday, his office spotlighted in i-D<\/a> some lesser-known New Yorkers in the fashion industry, including a tailor and union organizer, a Macy\u2019s employee and former Amazon delivery employees.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fashion industry is made possible by the thousands of workers behind the scenes\u2014seamstresses, tailors, retail workers, delivery drivers\u2014whose immense talent and dedication deserves to be celebrated,\u201d Mamdani said in a statement to the magazine. \u201cNew York is built by its workers, and the Mamdani administration believes they deserve to be seen with the same care and attention usually reserved for the red carpet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Council Speaker Julie Menin and Councilmembers Nantasha Williams and Gale Brewer are all expected to be in attendance. City Comptroller Mark Levine\u2019s office confirmed to the Daily News that he\u2019ll be there as well.<\/p>\n

The offices of New York Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand confirmed neither politician plans attend. They\u2019ve both skipped the event in the past as well.<\/p>\n

The offices of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez haven\u2019t responded to a request for comment. Ocasio-Cortez made waves in 2021 by showing up in an outfit with the words \u201cTax the Rich<\/a>\u201d written on it. The House Ethics Committee determined the representative from NY-14 should pay after determining what she declared for the outfit was short of the piece\u2019s fair market rate.<\/p>\n

Amazon boss Jeff Bezos<\/a> \u2014 who\u2019s been very friendly with the Trump administration \u2014 is an honorary chair at the gala, along with his wife, Lauren Sanchez Bezos. Protest signs<\/a> objecting to the multi-billionaire pair\u2019s involvement have showed up all over Manhattan in the days leading to to the gala<\/a>, which benefits the Metropolitan Museum of Art\u2019s Costume Institute.<\/p>\n

Celebrities including model Bella Hadid and actor Taraji P. Henson<\/a> joined other prominent figures<\/a> in expressing their displeasure with Bezos\u2019 politics on social media.<\/p>\n

Beyonc\u00e9, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams and Anna Wintour are also co-chairing Monday\u2019s celebration. Attendees are also expected to include<\/a> Angela Bassett, Doja Cat, Lena Dunham, Misty Copeland and Zo\u00eb Kravitz.<\/p>\n
