{"id":773731,"date":"2026-05-05T00:32:23","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T00:32:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/773731\/"},"modified":"2026-05-05T00:32:23","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T00:32:23","slug":"vandals-spray-paint-swastikas-hitler-graffiti-on-jewish-sites-homes-in-nyc-spree","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/773731\/","title":{"rendered":"Vandals spray paint swastikas, Hitler graffiti on Jewish sites, homes in NYC spree"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At least four people spray painted swastikas in red and black on the sides of at least five locations across the world\u2019s borough, according to City Council Speaker\u2019s Office and law enforcement sources.<\/p>\n<p>The rabbi for Congregation Machane Chodosh in Forest Hills, which was hit by the hateful graffiti, called it \u201cvery upsetting\u201d and noted the synagogue was actually formed by German-Jewish refugees who reached the Big Apple to escape Nazism.<\/p>\n<p>A photo shared by New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin shows Congregation Machane Chodosh, in Forest Hills Queens vandalized with antisemitic graffiti<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rabbi who founded our synagogue was himself a German refugee and dedicated the synagogue to the memory of the synagogues that were destroyed in Germany and the Jews who were murdered for being Jewish,\u201d Rabbi Yossi Mendelson told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe street is named Holocaust Memorial Corners so it feels so much more significant that this happened, it brings up our history and reminds us that we have to stick together and we have no choice but to lean into our identity and celebrate it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The swastika at Congregation Machane Chodosh was etched on its street-facing fa\u00e7ade and partially over a plaque memorializing the Jewish communities who were killed during the Holocaust, said Mendelson.<\/p>\n<p>The vandals also targeted the Rego Park Jewish Center, with two homes and a car damaged by the graffiti, law enforcement sources said. The NYPD only confirmed multiple locations were hit.<\/p>\n<p>The Jewish center had Hitler graffiti written in front of the building, according to photos of the scene.<\/p>\n<p>Rego Park Jewish Center Rabbi Romiel Daniel\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/news\/queens-hate-filled-graffiti-swastikas-rampage-05042026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">told AMNY<\/a>\u00a0that building is used by children and seniors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are certainly concerned. Being, first of all, it\u2019s a Jewish organization, and you know what\u2019s happening country-wide, and especially in New York, we have to be a little more concerned,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Two homes were also targeted. <\/p>\n<p>City Council Speaker Julie Menin, the first Jewish speaker in Big Apple history, said police were seeking at least four suspects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen rabbis and congregants arrived to pray this morning, they expected to be met with their usual loving community,\u201d Menin\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SpeakerMenin\/status\/2051327522843803877?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">wrote on X.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen a family woke up, they were prepared to begin an otherwise normal week. Instead, they were met with terrifying signals of hatred and threats of violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Photos released by her office showed black swastikas spray painted on a garage door and window with red circles around them.<\/p>\n<p>Menin visited Congregation Machane Chodosh with Council members Phil Wong and Lynn Schulman.<\/p>\n<p>The Rego Park Jewish Center was also vandalized.  FreedomNewsTV<\/p>\n<p>A slew of other elected officials \u2014 including Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Gov. Kathy Hochul \u2014 condemned the antisemitic graffiti.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not just vandalism \u2014 it is a deliberate act of antisemitic hatred meant to instill fear,\u201d Mamdani\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NYCMayor\/status\/2051365650858230166?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">said on X.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hochul\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovKathyHochul\/status\/2051361833865412798?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">said on X<\/a>\u00a0that the New York State Police are working with the NYPD to help crack the case.<\/p>\n<p>House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said he was \u201cappalled\u201d by the unsettling vandalism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am appalled that the Jewish community in New York City is once again under attack, this time the target of horrifying, coordinated antisemitic vandalism across institutions in Queens,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery Jewish New Yorker should be able to live and exist in Jewish life without the fear of this vile hate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CEO for Teach Coalition, which oversees security grants for Congregation Machane Chodosh, said the vandalism proves that ongoing investment in security for Jewish institutions is critical.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWaking up to swastikas on a synagogue, homes, and a Jewish center that houses a preschool is\u00a0not just vandalism, it is a direct act of intimidation\u00a0against an entire community,\u201d said CEO Sydney Altfield.<\/p>\n<p>The NYPD said Monday afternoon it was still determining if the incidents are all connected with the probe in the early stages.
