CJ Hendry and Lewis Cook, the married artists behind Space Club,<\/a> are selling their Greenpoint brownstone. In 2020, the couple spent<\/a> $1.65 million on a fixer-upper on Leonard Street near the northeast point of McCarren Park. They pulled out the old wood moldings and wallpaper to create a bleached-white, museum-esque four-bedroom home that their brokers are now listing<\/a> as a $4.85 million \u201cwork of residential art.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hendry and Cook wanted their home to be a rest from visually busy day jobs. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to look at our art or other art,\u201d Hendry told<\/a> Architectural Digest in 2023. \u201cWe need a break from color.\u201d Thus they settled on a palette she described as \u201cgreige\u201d and a design she compared to a \u201cminimal, Los Angeles\u2013esque aesthetic\u201d in which the quirkiest feature is the home\u2019s old spiral staircase \u2014 even there, the\u00a0old wood railing got slathered in a thick coat of white paint. The Brooklyn-based firm noroof<\/a> put what it calls<\/a> an oval \u201coculus\u201d skylight over the staircase, cut Big Windows<\/a> into the rear, added a roof-deck, and finished the garden level in tile and turned it into a playroom. Their broker, Yuval Vidal, says renovated single-family homes at this scale \u2014\u00a04,000 square feet \u2014 are hard to come by in this part of Greenpoint: \u201cThere\u2019s nothing else. Just this one. That\u2019s it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The listing is so minimally furnished that it can be hard to recognize it as Hendry\u2019s, but Space Club parents will recognize the cloth hammock in the playroom. Also in the playroom, there are also several \u201cPlaid\u201d drawings from Hendry\u2019s 2023 show in a space<\/a> designed to work as a kind of indoor playground for adults. It never closed<\/a>, and the rest is history.<\/p>\n

Hendry and Cook didn\u2019t respond to a request for comment on the sale. Cook now runs a mini-empire of his own, selling limited-edition prints under the name Andy Blank, and Space Club now has three locations with hundreds of members. That could give them options. Perhaps they never got over the building\u2019s central problem. \u201cI thought I wanted a 25-foot-wide house, but this one was very narrow at 16 feet wide,\u201d Hendry told Architectural Digest. The couple\u2019s architect, on a page dedicated to the house, refers to the project as \u201cSkinny Leonard.\u201d And on a house tour that Hendry shared on Instagram, her mother, Judy, acknowledged it was a \u201cvery, very narrow house,\u201d but she didn\u2019t list other drawbacks. \u201cI enjoy it as much as the kids,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
