{"id":774222,"date":"2026-05-05T05:38:42","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T05:38:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/774222\/"},"modified":"2026-05-05T05:38:42","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T05:38:42","slug":"chicagos-coyotes-the-ghosts-of-the-city-help-balance-urban-ecosystem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/774222\/","title":{"rendered":"Chicago\u2019s coyotes \u2014 the \u2018ghosts of the city\u2019 \u2014 help balance urban ecosystem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">CHICAGO (<a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/wgntv.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:WGN;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">WGN<\/a>) \u2014 Chicago is a city of nearly 3 million people, 77 neighborhoods and 1,700 coyotes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe ghosts of the city, they\u2019re out there,\u201d said Stanley Gehrt, an Ohio State University professor and researcher. \u201cThey\u2019re basically invisible to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Gehrt has spent more than a quarter century not only seeing them but also studying them since they first arrived in the area in the late 1990s.<\/p>\n<p><a data-ylk=\"ct:story;elm:img;itc:0;\" class=\"stretched-box\" href=\"https:\/\/wgntv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/05\/coyotes.jpg\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><img alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"518\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/403a7a543b1a5f1af4720ee07dbb056c.jpeg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI assumed I would be here for one year. There would be nothing to study, and I would move on with my career somewhere else,\u201d Gehrt said. \u201cThe last thing I expected to be studying here in the Chicago region was coyotes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">To his amazement, he found a world of urban coyotes along with a fascinating question: Why are these predators of the wide-open western plains moving into densely populated cities?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The conventional wisdom held that humans were encroaching on wild habitats, forcing a migration to the metropolis, but Gehrt\u2019s research found the opposite.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThat\u2019s actually a case of coyotes moving into our domains, not the other way around,\u201d he said. \u201cWhy is that? Once they move into the Chicago region, what we found, to our surprise, is that their survival rates are higher than they are out in the country or more rural areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a data-ylk=\"ct:story;elm:img;itc:0;\" class=\"stretched-box\" href=\"https:\/\/wgntv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/05\/coyotes3.jpg\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><img alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"531\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/08d3832a97a977d8bcb357ad6c2cd03b.jpeg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In rural areas, only 15% of coyotes survive one year; in Chicago, 65% do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">One reason: unlike rural areas, Chicago doesn\u2019t allow hunting and trapping.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But even more important, the coyotes find plenty of food while helping to control the city\u2019s rodent and rabbit populations.\u00a0 And, surprisingly, they\u2019re not eating human food.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/wgntv.com\/news\/chicago-news\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:Read more: Latest Chicago news and headlines;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"> Read more: Latest Chicago news and headlines <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cNot only are they not eating it,\u201d Gehrt said. \u201cThey\u2019re avoiding it. Because it\u2019s there. It\u2019s present for them to take and they ignore it. They prefer the more natural foods because of their fear of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">These are some of the revelations in a scientific study that has lasted 26 years and counting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Some basic questions were answered years ago:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"mb-4\">\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>What\u2019s the coyote population?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"mb-4\">\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In Chicago, 1,700. In Cook County, about 2,000.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>Where do they live?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"mb-4\">\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Cemeteries, golf courses, and the Forest Preserves.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>What do they eat?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"mb-4\">\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Rabbits, rodents, squirrels and natural berries.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>Are they a danger to humans?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"mb-4\">\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The answer to that one is no. There are fewer than ten coyote attacks on humans annually across North America. Coyotes can, however, pose a danger to smaller pets.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt generally happens in children six and under, and in areas where people are actively feeding them\u201d said Chris Anchor, the Forest Preserve District of Cook County\u2019s head wildlife biologist. \u201cAs long as you stay arm\u2019s length and don\u2019t bother them, they\u2019re not going to bother you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But after 26 years, researchers now have bigger questions: How have humans changed coyotes, and how have coyotes changed humans?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The McGraw Wildlife Foundation and the Forest Preserves of Cook County have funded Gehrt\u2019s research, <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/urbancoyoteresearch.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:The Urban Coyote Research Project;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">The Urban Coyote Research Project<\/a>, as he\u2019s worked closely with biologists Shane McKenzie and Anchor. \u00a0The coyotes have revealed themselves to be highly adaptable and intelligent animals.<\/p>\n<p><a data-ylk=\"ct:story;elm:img;itc:0;\" class=\"stretched-box\" href=\"https:\/\/wgntv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/05\/coyotes2.jpg\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><img alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"527\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/dc05b9852334590bc578df51da8c5d40.jpeg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt\u2019s always tricky to assign intelligence to wild animals,\u201d Gehrt said.\u00a0 \u201cYes, it helps explain why they\u2019re so successful in a complete hostile environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/wgntv.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:WGN News;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">WGN News<\/a> followed Gehrt and his team of researchers for more than a year to learn more about the elusive \u201cghosts of the city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The attached video shows researchers tracking, trapping, testing, and coyotes from December of 2005 to February of 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc.
