PlanPhilly reporters want to hear from you! <a href=\"#Section1\">Ask us a question or send us a story idea you think we should cover.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>Philadelphia residents who need help clearing trash and vegetation out of alleyways next to their homes can now request a team of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/officeofcleanandgreen.org\/alleyways\/?mc_cid=56ddcf80f3&amp;mc_eid=90acb8eb60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alleygators<\/a>\u201d through a dedicated online portal.\n<\/p>\n<p>The city\u2019s Office of Clean and Green Initiatives launched the Alleygator program as part of the city\u2019s biannual, 13-week citywide cleaning program.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile they are the responsibility of the resident, sometimes alleyways just get so overwhelmed with trash that residents don\u2019t have the ability to be able to do it themselves,\u201d said City Councilmember Quetcy Lozada, who represents Kensington, at an event announcing the new initiative Monday. \u201cIf your alleyway is dirty, if your alleyway doesn\u2019t have a light, if your alleyway needs attention, call us.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p>Employees in the city\u2019s Future Track job-training program will be reassigned from other cleanup and beautification tasks to focus on alleyway cleanups under the Alleygator initiative. The program will augment the city\u2019s existing alley-cleanup efforts through the Department of Sanitation and Community Life Improvement Program, or CLIP.\n<\/p>\n<p>The city\u2019s existing programs have cleaned over 3,000 alleyways since 2023, said Carlton Williams, director of Philadelphia\u2019s Office of Clean and Green Initiatives. The new program will add capacity to clean around 300 alleyways per year, Williams said. There are an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/philadelphia\/alleyways-philadelphia-trash-cleanup-20250416.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">estimated 16,000 alleyways<\/a> in Philadelphia.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe get a tremendous amount of calls from residents who don\u2019t have the means to clean up the alleys, because they\u2019ve gotten so bad over the years,\u201d Williams said. \u201cThey need heavy equipment. They need bodies. They need people dedicated to get it done.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Lozada said inaccessible alleys can create a safety issue if first responders aren\u2019t able to get through.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want our neighborhoods to be safe,\u201d she said. \u201cWe want our alleyways to be accessible for us as residents, but for our first responders, as well.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Residents can request the service through a <a href=\"https:\/\/officeofcleanandgreen.org\/alleyways\/?mc_cid=56ddcf80f3&amp;mc_eid=90acb8eb60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">form on the Office of Clean and Green website<\/a>. Williams said residents will be notified when their cleanup is scheduled and can work alongside the Future Track employees to clean their alleys.\n<\/p>\n<p>Each alley will be limited to one cleanup per year.\n        <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Have a question about Philly\u2019s neighborhoods or the systems that shape them?
