{"id":77462,"date":"2025-07-20T07:38:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-20T07:38:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/77462\/"},"modified":"2025-07-20T07:38:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-20T07:38:09","slug":"jennifer-love-hewitt-reflects-on-being-target-of-early-aughts-misogyny","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/77462\/","title":{"rendered":"Jennifer Love Hewitt Reflects On Being Target Of Early Aughts Misogyny"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tHaving risen to fame in the late \u201990s, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/jennifer-love-hewitt\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jennifer-love-hewitt\" data-tag=\"jennifer-love-hewitt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jennifer Love Hewitt<\/a> was among the many starlets caught in the crosshairs of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/culture\/22350286\/2000s-pop-culture-misogyny-britney-spears-janet-jackson-whitney-houston-monica-lewinsky\" target=\"_blank\">bubblegum misogyny<\/a> in the early aughts, particularly when it came to tabloid media and paparazzi. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIn a sprawling profile with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/article\/jennifer-love-hewitt-i-know-what-you-did-last-summer-interview.html\" target=\"_blank\">Vulture<\/a> tied to the return of scream queen Julie James in the legacy sequel <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/i-know-what-you-did-last-summer\/\" id=\"auto-tag_i-know-what-you-did-last-summer\" data-tag=\"i-know-what-you-did-last-summer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I Know What You Did Last Summer<\/a>, Hewitt said she only recently realized she experienced sexism en masse while viewing the documentary Framing Britney Spears, which exposes the harsh treatment the singer received from the public and media at the height of her fame and conservatorship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cWhen I started watching it, I was like,\u00a0\u2018Oh, they talked to me like that, oh.\u2019 I started crying for her. And then I realized I was crying for me,\u201d the actress said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe 9-1-1 mainstay said the reality of her experience \u201cbothers\u201d her moreso now as she realized \u201cbefore I even knew what sex was, I was a sex symbol.\u201d She continued of that era of pop culture: \u201cAll of a sudden, the pictures were of actresses stumbling out of clubs drunk. It was them at the grocery store looking terrible. It opened this very scary door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tHewitt added, \u201cI don\u2019t put blame on the people asking [inappropriate] questions. Nobody was saying, \u2018Don\u2019t talk to women like that. Don\u2019t talk to little girls like that.\u2019 But I worked hard on [I Know What You Did Last Summer]. I brought good stuff to it, and no one was talking about it. It was just \u2018Boob, boob, boob\u2019 everywhere. I didn\u2019t just show up to wear the little blue top and run around,\u201d referencing her iconic wardrobe from the 1997 original. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cI remember seeing the top for the first time, and I was like, \u2018This is a small shirt. What\u2019s happening here? We\u2019re just going to let it fly? OK, great. Here we go. Running again. There they go! Bouncy-bounce!\u2009&#8217;\u201d she recalled. While at the Australian press junket for the slasher, Hewitt attempted to make a point by wearing\u00a0a T-shirt that read \u201cSilicone-free.\u201d She said, \u201cI was like,\u00a0\u2018I\u2019ve had it.\u2019\u00a0I wore that shirt, and I felt so empowered. And then, of course, nobody cared. I really wanted to be a good actor, and I was trying to give to the people watching. I was trying to outact the conversation around my body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tHewitt also recalled a particular low point that came as a result of an infamous People cover <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/31705201@N06\/3002672489\" target=\"_blank\">featuring the headline \u201cStop Calling Me Fat!\u201d<\/a> and paparazzi photos taken during a vacation: \u201cI was having the time of my life \u2026 and they got the picture and then it was on the cover,\u201d she remembered. \u201cI don\u2019t think I was ever really insecure until that cover. And then when it happened, I don\u2019t know that I\u2019ve ever recovered from it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe Heartbreakers star said she credits her role in 9-1-1 and the opportunity to return to her IKWYDLS character as avenues that are more about her \u201cbody of work\u201d rather than her body. Though initially hesitant to return to the horror franchise because of audiences\u2019 opinions on her age and if Julie\u2019s characterization would be done justice in the requel, Hewitt said it was \u201chealing\u201d to step back on set, especially with a wardrobe she could control: \u201cNobody\u2019s going to be talking about my boobs. \u2018Oh, you want me to flash you? They\u2019re down here.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tReleased July 18 in theaters, the reboot follows a new cast of young people \u2014 Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Tyriq Withers, Sarah Pidgeon and Jonah Hauer-King \u2014 in Southport, who receive a threatening anonymous message about their actions the summer prior.
