But this week, Purina Cat Chow is offering the chance to take a “paws” for a little relief with a furry friend. A mobile Therapod, filled with purring professionals, is setting up shop in Washington Square Park from May 6 to 9.

Purina’s national Therapod Tour has launched just as semesters are wrapping up on college campuses around the country. This mobile, phone-free oasis designed to combat the stress of this time. The antidote? Certified therapy cats from Pet Partners.

The Therapod is the centerpiece of the Cats as Therapy (CAT) Project, an initiative aimed at highlighting how our feline friends help regulate our emotional states. For many NYC students who moved away from their childhood pets to live in cramped, “no-pets-allowed” dorms, the experience is a much-needed taste of home.

According to Dr. Annie Valuska, a Purina animal behaviorist, this isn’t just about cute Instagram fodder (though the cats are undeniably photogenic). “A cat quietly resting nearby or purring can help us slow down and reset,” Valuska explains. In fact, research shows that just ten minutes of feline fraternization can measurably reduce cortisol levels. For a student who has spent the last 48 hours surviving on caffeine and vending machine snacks, that reduction can be a literal lifesaver.

For the average Gen Z student—83% of whom admit to having an unhealthy relationship with their phones—the Therapod also offers a radical concept: ten minutes of total digital silence. The only “notifications” you’ll receive inside are gentle head-butts and the rhythmic vibration of a feline motor.

“College students are navigating a complex mix of academic demands and digital overstimulation,” says Dr. Taylor Chastain Griffin of Pet Partners. “The Therapod offers a brief but meaningful opportunity to step away and regulate their stress response.”

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, head over to Washington Square Park and put down your phone, step into the pod and remember that sometimes the best way to recharge isn’t with a cable, but with a whisker-to-whisker connection.

What: Cat Chow’s mobile “Therapod” featuring certified therapy cats from Pet Partners
When: May 6 to 7, from 10am to 4pm
Where: NYU’s College of Arts & Science entrance, adjacent to Washington Square Park

With finals looming and the semester ending, many students might be feeling overwhelmed.
