The show marks the comeback of Scott Rudin, the superstar producer who retreated from Broadway following multiple allegations of bullying and abuse in 2021. Rudin not only produced \u201cSalesman,\u201d he also oversaw \u201cLittle Bear Ridge Road,\u201d which earned a best play nomination. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThis year\u2019s Tony season has yet to determine a clear frontrunner. That 12-12-11 split among the top contenders is highly unusual in modern Tony history, where recent seasons have typically produced an undeniable favorite (i.e., \u201cHamilton\u201d with 16 or \u201cA Strange Loop\u201d with 11 in their respective winning years). <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe Lost Boys\u201d and \u201cSchmigaddon!,\u201d which are lavishly produced shows, will vie for best musical alongside two smaller-scale productions, the off-Broadway transfer \u201cTitan\u00edque\u201d and the West End export \u201cTwo Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York).\u201d \u201cRagtime\u201d will compete for best musical revival against \u201c\u201cCats: The Jellicle Ball,\u201d which transports the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical to the world of ballroom culture, and \u201cRichard O\u2019Brien\u2019s The Rocky Horror Show,\u201d a re-staging of the kinky cult favorite.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe best play category boasts several politically charged nominees. It\u2019s a group that includes not only \u201cLittle Bear Ridge Road,\u201d but also \u201cThe Balusters,\u201d a comedy about a dysfunctional neighborhood organization,\u201d as well as \u201cLiberation,\u201d the story of a group of feminists in the \u201970s, and \u201cGiant,\u201d a look at children\u2019s author Roald Dahl\u2019s antisemitism. Along with \u201cSalesman,\u201d the best play revival nominees include the relationship comedy \u201cBecky Shaw,\u201d the No\u00ebl Coward farce \u201cFallen Angels,\u201d a modern re-telling of \u201cOedipus\u201d (complete with a clock counting down to the big reveal) and \u201cEvery Brilliant Thing,\u201d a one-man show with Daniel Radcliffe as a grieving man.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tJune Squibb and Danny Burstein both broke Tony records for the same production \u2014 Jordan Harrison\u2019s \u201cMarjorie Prime.\u201d Squibb, 96, becomes the oldest acting nominee in Tony history with her best featured actress in a play nod. The nomination is also Squibb\u2019s first ever, arriving 67 years after her 1959 Broadway debut as Electra in the original \u201cGypsy\u201d opposite Ethel Merman. The Oscar nominee, who recently led the films \u201cThelma\u201d and Scarlett Johansson\u2019s directorial debut \u201cEleanor the Great,\u201d will compete against Betsy Aidem (\u201cLiberation\u201d), Marylouise Burke (\u201cThe Balusters\u201d), Aya Cash (\u201cGiant\u201d) and Metcalf (\u201cDeath of a Salesman\u201d).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBurstein\u2019s nod for the same play makes him the most-nominated male performer in Tony history, with nine career nominations, breaking a 47-year-old record set by Jason Robards. (Robards\u2019s eight nominations spanned 1957-1978.) Burstein won his sole trophy in 2020 for \u201cMoulin Rouge! The Musical.\u201d His category, best featured actor in a play, expanded to six nominees this year \u2014 Burstein joins Christopher Abbott (\u201cDeath of a Salesman\u201d), Brandon J. Dirden (\u201cWaiting for Godot\u201d), Alden Ehrenreich (\u201cBecky Shaw\u201d), Ruben Santiago-Hudson (\u201cAugust Wilson\u2019s Joe Turner\u2019s Come and Gone\u201d) and Richard Thomas (\u201cThe Balusters\u201d).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tComing off her best actress Oscar nomination earlier this year for Mary Bronstein\u2019s \u201cIf I Had Legs I\u2019d Kick You,\u201d Rose Byrne landed her first career Tony nomination for best actress in a play in Roundabout\u2019s revival of No\u00ebl Coward\u2019s \u201cFallen Angels.\u201d The Australian actress becomes the 17th woman (and 33rd performer) in history to score Tony and Oscar acting nominations in the same calendar year. The last performer of any gender to do it was Adam Driver in 2019, for \u201cBlacKkKlansman\u201d and \u201cBurn This.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tByrne shares the category with co-star Kelli O\u2019Hara \u2014 the rare same-show double-nomination in lead actress in a play \u2014 alongside Carrie Coon (\u201cBug\u201d), Susannah Flood (\u201cLiberation\u201d) and Lesley Manville (\u201cOedipus\u201d). The O\u2019Hara nod is also her ninth career Tony nomination, tying Burstein for second-most among living nominees and behind only Audra McDonald (11).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe lead actor in a play category produced one of the day\u2019s more striking lineups. Will Harrison earned a sole nomination for \u201cPunch,\u201d lending him outsider status against a heavyweight slate that includes Radcliffe and Lane, as well as \u201cGiant\u2019s\u201d John Lithgow and \u201cOedipus\u2019s\u201d Mark Strong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLane\u2019s nomination extends a notable pattern around the role across five Tony-recognized portrayals spanning 50 years \u2014 George C. Scott (1976), Brian Dennehy (1999), Philip Seymour Hoffman (2012), Wendell Pierce (2023) and now Lane \u2014 Loman has produced just one winner, Dennehy. (Lee J. Cobb originated the role in 1949 but did not receive a Tony nomination.) The 1-of-5 conversion places \u201cDeath of a Salesman\u201d among the most-nominated yet least-converted male roles in lead actor history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cTitan\u00edque\u201d co-creator Marla Mindelle earned nominations for both best actress in a musical and best book of a musical, immediately following Cole Escola\u2019s 2025 sweep of the same dual-category structure for \u201cOh, Mary!\u201d \u2014 making it two consecutive years of performer-writers being recognized as both star and author of their own work. Mindelle, who has played Celine Dion in the Titanic-meets-Dion-songbook parody since its 2017 development, will compete for best actress in a musical against Sara Chase (\u201cSchmigadoon!\u201d), Stephanie Hsu (Richard O\u2019Brien\u2019s \u201cThe Rocky Horror Show\u201d), Caissie Levy (\u201cRagtime\u201d) and Christiani Pitts (\u201cTwo Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)\u201d).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe most prominent snub of the day went to Lea Michele, whose leading role in Michael Mayer\u2019s revival of \u201cChess\u201d was widely projected to earn the \u201cGlee\u201d star her first Tony nomination. Instead, she failed to make the cut. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe Lost Boys\u201d director Michael Arden \u2014 already a two-time Tony winner for directing \u201cParade\u201d (2023) and \u201cMaybe Happy Ending\u201d (2025) \u2014 pulled off an unusual cross-craft double: he is nominated for both best direction of a musical and best lighting design of a musical, the latter shared with Jen Schriever. Director-as-co-lighting-designer is exceedingly rare at the Tony level. Arden told BuzzFeed during previews that he found himself \u201cthinking about the direction from a lighting perspective.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTwo \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d alumnae landed best featured actress in a musical nods \u2014 Rachel Dratch for Richard O\u2019Brien\u2019s \u201cThe Rocky Horror Show\u201d and Ana Gasteyer for \u201cSchmigadoon!\u201d \u2014 joining Shoshana Bean (\u201cThe Lost Boys\u201d), Hannah Cruz (\u201cChess\u201d) and Nichelle Lewis (\u201cRagtime\u201d).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cSchmigadoon!\u201d stands as one of the first major streaming-originated musicals to cross over to Broadway. Cinco Paul\u2019s Apple TV series ran for two seasons (2021-23) before getting a Kennedy Center stage premiere in Jan. 2025 and a Nederlander Theatre opening on April 20. Lorne Michaels and Apple TV are credited among the producers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMetcalf may have earned a featured actress in a play nod for \u201cDeath of a Salesman,\u201d but she missed out on lead actress in a play for \u201cLittle Bear Ridge Road.\u201d The 70-year-old two-time Tony winner (\u201cA Doll\u2019s House, Part 2,\u201d \u201cThree Tall Women\u201d) would have become only the seventh performer to score acting nominations in two different categories the same year, joining a list that includes Mark Rylance (2014) and Jeremy Pope (2019).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFour musicals have swept the Tony Awards\u2019 so-called \u201cbig six\u201d \u2014 best musical, best score, best book, best leading actor, best leading actress and best direction: \u201cSouth Pacific\u201d (1950), \u201cSweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street\u201d (1979), \u201cHairspray\u201d (2003) and \u201cThe Band\u2019s Visit\u201d (2018). Only two plays have achieved a comparable sweep of the \u201cbig four\u201d \u2014 best play, best leading actor, best leading actress and best direction: \u201cWho\u2019s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?\u201d (1963) and \u201cThe Real Thing\u201d (1984).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe eligibility cut-off for the 2025-2026 Broadway season was April 26, 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe Tony Awards are presented by the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing. The 79th annual ceremony will be held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and hosted by Grammy\u2011winning artist Pink. Raj Kapoor, Sarah Levine Hall and Jack Sussman will serve as executive producers for the theater\u2019s biggest night.
