Read below for today’s topics.

1. Robby Snelling could be poised for MLB debut with Miami Marlins

Reno’s Robby Snelling could be poised to make his major-league debut this week as the Miami Marlins cut starting pitcher Chris Paddack, opening a spot in their five-man rotation for Friday’s home game against the Washington Nationals. Snelling has been doing his part in Triple-A as he ranks first in the International League in strikeouts (44), second in opponent average (.116) and third in ERA (1.86). He most recently tossed five no-hit innings in his last start, striking out nine batters and walking just one last Friday against the Durham Bulls. One of the top pitching prospects in baseball, Snelling went 9-7 with a 2.51 ERA in 25 starts last season, splitting time between Double-A and Triple-A. Snelling would be the second McQueen High alum to reach the big leagues, following in the footsteps of outfielder Chris Aguila, who played in the majors from 2004-06 and 2008.

2. Ex-Nevada QB Brendon Lewis invited to Panthers minicamp

Former Nevada quarterback Brendon Lewis will participate in the Carolina Panthers’ rookie minicamp Friday and Saturday. Lewis spent two seasons at Colorado, two at Nevada and one at Memphis. He was a two-year starter for the Wolf Pack from 2023-24, struggling in his first season at Nevada before starring in his second year. In 2024, Lewis completed 67.6 percent of his passes for 2,290 yards with 16 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also led Nevada in rushing with 775 yards and eight scores. Last season at Memphis, Lewis accounted for 3,338 yards and 25 touchdowns.

3. Reno Aces’ all-time hits king Ildemaro Vargas the NL player of month

Ildemaro Vargas, who has the most hits in Reno Aces history, was named the National League player of the month for March/April. Vargas started this season with a hit in the Arizona Diamondbacks’ first 24 games to run his hit streak to 27 dating back to last season. Overall, Vargas hit .378 with a 1.087 OPS, smacking six homers and driving in 20 runs, in March/April. Vargas has been a professional journeyman who has spent much of his career in the Diamondbacks organization. He made his big-league debut in 2017 with Arizona and has played with five MLB organizations. He returned to Arizona last season and made this year’s opening-day roster. Vargas has played parts of six seasons with the Aces, recording a team-record 572 hits in 425 games. That included a 35-game hit streak, the fifth longest in a single season in Pacific Coast League history. In the big leagues, he is a career .259 hitter in 484 games.

You can sign up for Nevada Sport Net’s daily newsletter here.
