{"id":775438,"date":"2026-05-05T18:11:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T18:11:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/775438\/"},"modified":"2026-05-05T18:11:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T18:11:12","slug":"new-musicals-schmigadoon-and-lost-boys-lead-list-of-tony-nominees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/775438\/","title":{"rendered":"New Musicals \u2018Schmigadoon!\u2019 and \u2018Lost Boys\u2019 Lead List of Tony Nominees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cSchmigadoon!\u201d and \u201cThe Lost Boys,\u201d two Broadway musicals that opened just a few weeks ago, picked up more nods than any other shows as this year\u2019s Tony nominations were announced on Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/20\/theater\/schmigadoon-review-brightman-broadway.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Schmigadoon!<\/a>\u201d is adapted from the Apple TV series, and \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/26\/theater\/the-lost-boys-review.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Lost Boys<\/a>\u201d is based on the 1987 teen vampire film; they will face \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/12\/theater\/titanique-review-broadway-dion.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Titan\u00edque<\/a>,\u201d a Celine Dion-inflected spoof of the \u201cTitanic\u201d movie, and \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/02\/09\/theater\/two-strangers-broadway-christiani-pitts-sam-tutty.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)<\/a>,\u201d an original romantic comedy, in the financially important race for best new musical. At a time when the economics of new musicals have become increasingly challenging, all four shows could use the boost that nominations, and particularly a win, could bring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">For Cinco Paul, a creator of \u201cSchmigadoon!\u201d onscreen and onstage, the nominations came at an auspicious time: his 62nd birthday. (He was named for Cinco de Mayo.) He planned to mark the occasion by returning to the show to celebrate with the cast and crew.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cIt may end up being the best birthday ever,\u201d he said. \u201cTwenty-five years ago, in close proximity, I watched \u2018Brigadoon\u2019 and \u2018An American Werewolf in London\u2019 and thought, \u2018What if two modern people ended up stuck in a musical?\u2019 I set it aside for decades, and for it now to be on Broadway and recognized like this is beyond my wildest dreams, truly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The awards ceremony will take place on June 7 at Radio City Music Hall, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/09\/theater\/tonys-host-pink.html?smid=url-share\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hosted by the musician Pink<\/a> and broadcast on CBS.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">As musicals on Broadway struggle, starry plays are faring better, and the list of nominations reflects a rush of celebrities to the stage: Among the nominees are the film stars John Lithgow, Daniel Radcliffe, Rose Byrne and Lesley Manville.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cI couldn\u2019t be more surprised and delighted and it\u2019s genuinely unexpected,\u201d said Radcliffe, who is starring in an unusual show, \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/12\/theater\/every-brilliant-thing-review-daniel-radcliffe.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Every Brilliant Thing<\/a>,\u201d in which he is the only actor, telling a story about depression and hope, with a high level of audience participation. The show has been selling extremely well, and is shaping up to be one of the season\u2019s handful of successes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cFor it to have gone like this is truly beyond my wildest dreams for it,\u201d Radcliffe said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">This year\u2019s nominations suggest a notable comeback for <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/28\/theater\/scott-rudin-return.html?smid=url-share\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the producer Scott Rudin, who returned to Broadway<\/a> after a four-year hiatus prompted by news reports about his propensity for bullying behavior. He produced two shows this season, a revival of \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/09\/theater\/death-of-a-salesman-review-broadway-lane-metcalf.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Death of a Salesman<\/a>\u201d and a new play called \u201cLittle Bear Ridge Road,\u201d and both were nominated as the best in their categories.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">A few records were set during the nominations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Danny Burstein, a beloved Broadway actor, was nominated in the featured actor category for his performance in the artificial intelligence play \u201cMarjorie Prime.\u201d This is his ninth Tony nomination (he won for \u201cMoulin Rouge!\u201d), making him the most-nominated male performer in history, breaking a tie with Jason Robards Jr.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Burstein\u2019s \u201cMarjorie Prime\u201d co-star June Squibb was also nominated for a Tony Award; at 96 years old, she is the oldest nominee ever in her category, featured actress in a play.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cI just keep working, and I don\u2019t think that much about it \u2014 I have to deal with my body now, which I didn\u2019t used to have to do, but I read a script and if I think I can do it physically, then I\u2019m interested,\u201d Squibb said in a phone interview from Vancouver, where she is filming the TV show \u201cYellowjackets.\u201d \u201cWhy not? I love acting. I love everything about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Among the other nominees for performances in leading roles are two longtime Broadway favorites: Nathan Lane (a three-time Tony winner now starring in \u201cDeath of a Salesman\u201d) and Kelli O\u2019Hara. O\u2019Hara has been nominated for each of her last nine Broadway appearances, including her current show \u2014 a revival of \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/19\/theater\/fallen-angels-review-byrne-kelli-ohara-broadway.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fallen Angels<\/a>.\u201d (She has won once, for \u201cThe King and I.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cThe Lost Boys\u201d and \u201cSchmigadoon!\u201d picked up 12 nominations each. Close behind, with 11 nominations, is an acclaimed revival of the musical \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/10\/16\/theater\/ragtime-review-henry-debessonet.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ragtime<\/a>,\u201d which is a production of the nonprofit Lincoln Center Theater.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Among the lead producers of \u201cThe Lost Boys\u201d is the actor Patrick Wilson, who has been working on the show with two of his college buddies. \u201cThis is a 25-year dream of us putting a show together,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t think I had any idea what theater producing was, and it\u2019s been an all-out effort in between every acting gig I\u2019ve had, just trying to keep the ball moving, and this is incredibly exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">A half-dozen shows got zero nominations, including the new musicals \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/11\/09\/theater\/queen-of-versailles-broadway-chenoweth.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Queen of Versailles<\/a>,\u201d which closed after a brief run last fall, and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/22\/theater\/beaches-review-broadway.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cBeaches,\u201d<\/a> which is struggling at the box office after opening to poor reviews last month. Starry revivals of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/16\/theater\/proof-review-ayo-edebiri-don-cheadle.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cProof\u201d<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/09\/16\/theater\/art-review-cannavale-corden-neil-patrick-harris.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cArt\u201d<\/a> also went home empty-handed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The contenders for best leading actress in a musical are all first-time nominees: Sara Chase (\u201cSchmigadoon!\u201d), Stephanie Hsu (\u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/23\/theater\/rocky-horror-show-review.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Rocky Horror Show<\/a>\u201d), Caissie Levy (\u201cRagtime\u201d), Marla Mindelle (\u201cTitan\u00edque\u201d) and Christiani Pitts (\u201cTwo Strangers\u201d). The race for best leading actor in a musical, dominated throughout the season by Joshua Henry of \u201cRagtime,\u201d also features Nicholas Christopher (\u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/11\/16\/theater\/chess-review-lea-michele-broadway.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chess<\/a>\u201d), Luke Evans (\u201cThe Rocky Horror Show\u201d), Sam Tutty (\u201cTwo Strangers\u201d) and Brandon Uranowitz (\u201cRagtime\u201d).<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Lane, Radcliffe and Lithgow (\u201cGiant\u201d) were all nominated as best actor in a play, alongside Will Harrison (\u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/09\/29\/theater\/punch-review-james-graham.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Punch<\/a>\u201d) and Mark Strong (\u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/11\/13\/theater\/oedipus-review-strong-manville.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oedipus<\/a>\u201d). Byrne and O\u2019Hara, co-starring in \u201cFallen Angels,\u201d will face Carrie Coon (\u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/08\/theater\/bug-review-carrie-coon.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bug<\/a>\u201d), Susannah Flood (\u201cLiberation\u201d) and Manville (\u201cOedipus\u201d) in the race for best leading actress in a play.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s my first time on Broadway, and for it to have culminated in a Tony nomination is thrilling,\u201d Manville said in a phone interview from London, where she is starring in a revival of \u201cLes Liaisons Dangereuses.\u201d \u201cThere\u2019s just something about Broadway where just the word even conjures up all sorts of images and impressions and history and nostalgia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The nominations were announced in New York by the actors Uzo Aduba<strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\"> <\/strong>and Darren Criss, beginning a monthlong award period. The 857 Tony voters \u2014 mostly people who work in theater or who help finance Broadway shows \u2014 must finish seeing the latest productions, while the productions, constrained by newly restrictive rules limiting campaigning and promotion, look for ways to remind voters about the strengths of their nominees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The season has been a mixed bag for Broadway. Overall attendance and grosses are up over last season, but profitability rates are low because of skyrocketing production costs, and there is rising consumer concern about ticket prices. Only six new musicals opened this season, down from 14 last season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The Tony Awards, which honor plays and musicals performed in the 41 Manhattan theaters that make up Broadway, are presented by the Broadway League and the American Theater Wing.
