{"id":775532,"date":"2026-05-05T19:02:23","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T19:02:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/775532\/"},"modified":"2026-05-05T19:02:23","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T19:02:23","slug":"unitedhealth-to-remove-annoying-barrier-for-slew-of-medical-procedures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/775532\/","title":{"rendered":"UnitedHealth to remove annoying barrier for slew of medical procedures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UnitedHealth Group said Tuesday it is planning to stop requiring doctors to get approvals for a slew of tests, surgeries and other procedures, an effort to ease patient access to care.<\/p>\n<p>The company, which runs the largest insurer in the US, will use AI to cease requiring approvals for echocardiograms, chiropractic care, certain outpatient surgeries and some outpatient therapy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedhealthgroup.com\/newsroom\/2026\/2026-05-05-uhc-cuts-prior-authorization-requirements-by-30-percent.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\">according to a press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The authorization process has long been despised by both doctors and patients, who blame the lengthy paperwork process for slowing down \u2014 and at times preventing \u2014 necessary treatment.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39287031\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/2024-honor-ceo-brian-thompson-123993082.jpg\" alt=\"The UnitedHealthcare headquarters in Minnetonka, Minnesota, with flags at half-staff.\" class=\"wp-image-39287031\"  \/>UnitedHealth said Tuesday it is planning to slash required authorizations by nearly a third later this year. AP<\/p>\n<p>Industry giants including CVS Health\u2019s Aetna and Cigna Group have pledged to ease authorizations in an effort to quell heated backlash against the healthcare system in the wake of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson\u2019s shocking killing in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Accused murderer Luigi Mangione <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/04\/us-news\/luigi-mangiones-manifesto-reveals-reason-for-targeting-unitedhealthcare-ceo-brian-thompson-docs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ranted about the healthcare industry<\/a>, which he wrote \u201cextracts human life force for money,\u201d in diary entries ahead of the fatal shooting. He\u2019s set to go on trial this fall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrior authorization is an essential safeguard but should only be used when it truly protects patients and improves care,\u201d UnitedHealthcare CEO Tim Noel said in a Tuesday statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEliminating these requirements is one more way we are working to make it easier for patients to get the care they need when they need it and ensure doctors can spend more time with their patients,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Insurers have slashed about 11% of pre-authorizations since launching a joint reform effort in 2025, according to health industry organizations \u2013 though groups representing healthcare providers have said they\u2019ve seen limited impact.<\/p>\n<p>Noel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/health\/healthcare\/unitedhealth-prior-authorization-278ec87f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">told the Wall Street Journal<\/a> that the move is just an early signal of how AI can help change healthcare\u2019s complex financial system. Pcess609 \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>The new AI-backed tech will not be used to deny insurance claims, according to the exec.<\/p>\n<p>Insurance companies have long argued that approvals are necessary to prevent expensive, potentially unnecessary procedures.<\/p>\n<p>UnitedHealthcare said prior authorizations are only required for 2% of its medical services.
