They sent multiple people to the hospital. New data is raising questions about how often gas leaks are happening across the region.

The explosions happened in Preston Hollow, where neighbors say the blast came without warning.

However, state records indicate that gas leaks are being reported far more frequently than many may realize.

From July through December 2025, 1,043 gas leaks were reported in Bexar County alone, according to the Texas Railroad Commission.

And it is not just Bexar County.

Comal County reported 162 leaks. Guadalupe County reported 90. Kerr County reported 67.

Across Maverick, Val Verde, Uvalde, Zavala, Medina, and Kendall counties, 71 gas leaks were reported during that same six-month period.

Altogether, that is more than 1,500 leaks across the San Antonio area in just six months.

In Bexar County, CPS Energy is the primary provider responsible for maintaining the natural gas system.

Attorney Michael Lyons, who focuses on fire and explosion cases, says gas leaks can become dangerous when they meet an ignition source.

“For the last 27 years, one of the areas of focus for my practice is fire and explosion cases, and so I have handled and tried cases coast to coast involving gas utility leaks,” Lyons said.

Lyons won a $110 million verdict in Bexar County last year against CPS Energy in a similar gas explosion case. He is now representing the two families whose homes exploded in Preston Hollow, the Ochoa-Reeves family and the Nowells. He spoke with us last week before agreeing to represent the families and has not commented since taking the case.

“All you need is a competent ignition source to meet that fuel load, and it can cause a very intense explosion,” Lyons said.

The data also shows how severe many of those leaks are.

In Bexar County, 532 of the 1,043 leaks reported between July and December were classified as Grade 1, the highest risk level requiring immediate repair.

That is more than half of all reported leaks.

“What we see throughout Texas, not just with respect to Bexar County and CPS, is that a lot of these gas systems are old. They are deteriorating, and they are leaking,” Lyons said.

To put those numbers into context, Harris County reported more than 9,000 leaks, with nearly 4,000 classified as high risk. Dallas County reported more than 5,600 leaks, with fewer than 1,000 classified as high risk.

In Bexar County, 532 of 1,043 leaks were high risk.

Back at the Preston Hollow explosion site, investigators are still working to determine what caused the blast.

A key part of that investigation will come from the PS-95 leak report, a required state filing that documents where a leak was located, whether it was above or below ground, what kind of pipe or equipment was involved, and how severe it was.

The report also tracks what may have caused the leak, from corrosion to equipment failure to outside damage, and how it was repaired.

“Where did the leak come from? What was the degree of that leak? How long had it been leaking?” Lyons said.

Those are questions investigators are still working to answer.

FOX SA gathered data from the Texas Railroad Commission and mapped it so you can see how many gas leaks have been reported in your county.
