A California State University, Northridge volleyball player is keeping his focus on his craft after a sports announcer came under fire for remarks he made regarding the athlete\u2019s reactions on the court.<\/p>\n
Jordan Lucas\u2019s celebrations on the court have made the outside hitter go viral online. His reactions garnered comment from University of California, Irvine announcer Charlie Brande during a match against the school last month, in which the commentator denounced the athlete\u2019s celebrations.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m amazed Jordan Lucas hasn\u2019t been popped by somebody,\u201d Brande said during his commentary. \u201cHis antics he\u2019s making under the net, it\u2019s very distasteful.\u201d<\/p>\n
Brande quickly drew criticism for his comments, with people online defending Lucas. Some people argued that the announcer\u2019s comments were homophobic against Lucas, who is openly gay.<\/p>\n
\u201cA couple of friends and family reached out to me and sent me the video or kind of told me about it, and I was kind of just unsure and like, distraught in a way,\u201d Lucas said. \u201c\u2026 Obviously, some people love the way that I played and some people don’t.\u201d<\/p>\n
In response to Brande\u2019s comments, UC Irvine said he would not be taking part in any future broadcasts since his remarks did not meet the university\u2019s standards. The announcer released a statement issued by UCI, apologizing to the volleyball player.<\/p>\n
\u201cMost importantly, I apologize to Jordan. I wholeheartedly regret my comment towards him,\u201d the statement read. \u201cI take full accountability for my comment and the damage it may have caused. Violence should never be acceptable or tolerated.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lucas said he wasn\u2019t going to let the remarks ruin the love he has for the game. He said he plans to continue dominating on the court and celebrating as he pleases.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe’re a top 20 program here at Northridge, and we play only top programs within the country, nationally ranked,\u201d Lucas said. \u201cAnd so, you know, if guys are going to talk trash and kind of have that, then I’m going to have my swagger, as well.
