MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA<\/a>) – After much contention and debate, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts Executive Board has appointed a temporary director. The City of Montgomery and the board have also worked together to clarify who has the power to make decisions regarding the museum.<\/p>\n

Both city officials and museum board members describe their recent disagreements as \u201cgrowing pains.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are some things that make us bifurcated,\u201d William \u201cBill\u201d Ford, joint board president, said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got the city that owns the building, maintains the building and pays salaries, and the association owns the art, so neither one of us can exist without the other.\u201d<\/p>\n

The first order of business at the meeting was clarifying which entity is responsible for what.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe board has the authority to run this museum, and that\u2019s not only important because of the qualities they bring as individual members, but also to stay an accredited museum; it has to be a board-run institution,\u201d Carter Goodwyn, joint board governance committee chair, said.<\/p>\n

Dr. Jennifer Dobbs with the City of Montgomery says the meeting gave all parties a chance to get on the same page.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone has clarity around their roles and responsibilities, and that will allow us to move forward and just focus on the art in the museum,\u201d Dobbs said.<\/p>\n

The meeting ended with the board unanimously voting to appoint Alice Novak as the temporary director of the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts. It\u2019s a decision that all parties involved seem excited about.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe is the perfect person for this position,\u201d Ford said.<\/p>\n

While moments of the meeting were tense, in the end, all parties acknowledged they are working towards a common goal to serve the people of Montgomery.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s nothing wrong with having healthy discussion and debate,\u201d Dobbs said. \u201cWe shouldn\u2019t be afraid of it, as long as it stays civil, respectful, and all of those things.\u201d<\/p>\n

There is still work to be done, but the city and the museum board have agreed to work together to solve remaining issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe do still have some issues with some of the things that appear to be stumbling blocks, but I think we\u2019ll be able to work through them with attorney Wallace Mills and Dr. Dobbs\u2019 cooperation,\u201d said Ford. \u201cShe\u2019s really doing a great job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Novak has served the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts since 2001 in various roles, including outreach coordinator, curator of education and consultant.<\/p>\n
