Before you consult your Farmers\u2019 Almanac, a pollen tsunami is a significantly longer and more intense allergy season buoyed by warmer temperatures, rising carbon dioxide levels and increased air pollution.<\/p>\n<p>Pollen seasons have\u00a0lengthened by about 20 days, while pollen concentrations have\u00a0jumped by 21%\u00a0over the past three decades, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schweigerderm.com\/providers\/clifford-w-bassett-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Dr. Clifford Bassett<\/a> said, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.2013284118\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">citing research from 2021.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39286693\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/woman-suffering-seasonal-pollen-allergy-126973230.jpg\" alt=\"A woman with light brown hair sneezes into a tissue outdoors with pink blossoming trees in the background.\" class=\"wp-image-39286693\"  \/>It could be a cold \u2014 or it could be allergies. It might be difficult to discern unless you see a medical professional. New Africa \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>Allergy sufferers already know it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/27\/health\/were-in-for-a-bad-allergy-season-why-your-go-to-meds-may-not-work\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">worse than ever<\/a> \u2014 and it\u2019s not over yet. Bassett said the tsunami will reach its first peak in May.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA 15-year study of the NYC metro area by the AAAAI National Allergy Bureau confirmed the seasonal pattern: tree pollen dominates and peaks in May, grass pollen peaks in June and ragweed dominates from August through October,\u201d Bassett, an allergist and immunologist at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schweigerderm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Schweiger Dermatology &amp; Allergy Group<\/a> in Manhattan, told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the first pollen wave, Bassett shares five symptoms that signal it\u2019s time to see a board-certified allergist.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Allergy face\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Bassett said he sees this vexing visage \u2014 dark circles under the eyes, puffy eyelids and creased lines beneath the lower lids \u2014 every day at the office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPatients come in convinced they just look tired or old,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s not aging \u2014 it\u2019s allergic inflammation backing up blood flow around the eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brain fog<\/p>\n<p>A noggin that\u2019s foggin\u2019 typically means difficulties with concentration and memory. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bannerhealth.com\/healthcareblog\/teach-me\/why-spring-allergies-can-cause-fatigue-headaches-or-brain-fog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">About 30% of allergy patients<\/a> report these troubles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor kids, it can look like attention problems at school,\u201d said Bassett, who wrote <a data-aps-asc-tag=\"nypost-20\" data-aps-asin=\"1101980583\" data-wrapped-template=\"https:\/\/r.nypostlink.com?btn_ref=org-19984c113c692001&amp;btn_url\" href=\"https:\/\/r.nypostlink.com?btn_ref=org-19984c113c692001&amp;btn_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FNew-Allergy-Solution-Supercharge-Resistance%2Fdp%2F1101980583%3Ftag%3Dnypost-20%26asc_refurl%3Dhttps%3A%2F%2Fnypost.com%2F2026%2F05%2F06%2Fhealth%2Fhow-to-survive-a-pollen-tsunami-and-5-signs-to-get-medical-help%2F%26asc_source%3Dweb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\">\u201cThe New Allergy Solution.\u201d<\/a> \u201cFor adults, [the brain] operates at 60% all day, and we\u2019re not sure why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Relentless restlessness<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3576835\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Studies confirm<\/a> that allergies significantly contribute to chronic fatigue.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39286752\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/awake-woman-insomnia-lying-pillow-126973141.jpg\" alt=\"Woman with long dark hair lying awake in bed with her face buried in a pillow.\" class=\"wp-image-39286752\"  \/>Allergies can keep you up all night, tossing and turning, if you don\u2019t have a plan to tackle them. LIGHTFIELD STUDIOS \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongested nasal and sinus passages physically obstruct the airway at night, leading to mouth breathing, snoring and restless sleep,\u201d Bassett explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen sleep suffers night after night, everything cascades \u2014 fatigue, mood, irritability, appearance, performance at work and school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Persistent cough<\/p>\n<p>Postnasal drip \u2014 when excess mucus from the nose and sinuses drips down the back of the throat \u2014 often causes a cough that might be easily mistaken for a cold symptom.<\/p>\n<p>If the cough lingers for weeks instead of days, Bassett said allergies should be considered.<\/p>\n<p>Hearing troubles<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAllergic inflammation swells the eustachian tubes, [causing] that plugged-up, underwater feeling that people often blame on sinus problems,\u201d Bassett said.<\/p>\n<p>How to survive a pollen tsunami<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany patients come in thinking they have \u2018bad sinuses\u2019 or \u2018a cold every spring\u2019 \u2014 and it turns out they have specific, treatable allergies they never knew about,\u201d Bassett said.<\/p>\n<p>Here are Bassett\u2019s six tips for nipping your allergies in the bud.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Undergo skin testing, a \u201cnearly painless\u201d procedure that pinpoints the problematic pollen and indoor triggers.<\/li>\n<li>Start your <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/03\/17\/health\/doctors-spring-allergy-tool-kit-can-minimize-symptoms\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">over-the-counter or prescription allergy meds<\/a> before the season peaks \u2014 don\u2019t wait until you\u2019re miserable.<\/li>\n<li>Keep track of the weather and daily pollen counts at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaaai.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">aaaai.org<\/a>. \u201cWindy, dry days\u00a0are the worst for pollen,\u201d Bassett said. \u201cWet, calm days\u00a0are your friend.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Consider wearing a hat, sunglasses and a face mask to block pollen. When you come indoors, and especially before you go to bed, make sure to shower, wash your hair and change clothes to rid your body of clingy pollen.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/article\/best-air-purifiers-for-allergies\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A HEPA air purifier<\/a>, clean bedding that\u2019s washed weekly in hot water, air conditioning and closed windows can go a long way to making your bedroom an \u201callergy sanctuary.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Devise a long-term plan with your allergist.
