{"id":777825,"date":"2026-05-06T18:18:21","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T18:18:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/777825\/"},"modified":"2026-05-06T18:18:21","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T18:18:21","slug":"channel-4-ceo-rails-against-bbc-merger-would-be-loss-to-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/777825\/","title":{"rendered":"Channel 4 CEO Rails Against BBC Merger; Would Be &#8220;Loss To Society&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/priya-dogra\/\" id=\"auto-tag_priya-dogra\" data-tag=\"priya-dogra\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Priya Dogra<\/a> has used her first public address as <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/channel-4\/\" id=\"auto-tag_channel-4\" data-tag=\"channel-4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Channel 4<\/a>\u2018s new CEO to pour cold water on the idea that the UK network should merge with the BBC to compete with YouTube and Netflix.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIn a fireside chat at the <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/creative-cities-convention\/\" id=\"auto-tag_creative-cities-convention\" data-tag=\"creative-cities-convention\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Creative Cities Convention<\/a> in Liverpool, the former Warner Bros. Discovery and Sky executive said combining the BBC and Channel 4 would leave the UK\u2019s creative community and audience short-changed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe mooted merger has been a source of industry speculation for years. The British government has fanned the flames of this conversation, <a data-id=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/06\/creative-industries-sector-plan-uk-government-broadcaster-review-1236439651\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/06\/creative-industries-sector-plan-uk-government-broadcaster-review-1236439651\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tasking the UK\u2019s Competition &amp; Markets Authority and regulator Ofcom to review<\/a> how consolidation could change the industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tDogra\u2019s position was clear. \u201cI was in mergers and acquisitions for a long time. And the thing you learn is that there are no mergers. There are only acquisitions. Someone is always buying someone else and from my seat, that\u2019s the wrong answer for Channel 4, because it would just mean the Channel 4 gets subsumed into another organization,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cI think the loss of Channel 4\u2019s editorial voice, the impact that we have on content [and] on indies, that would be a loss to society, [and] a real loss for the creative economy.\u201d Dogra added that she was \u201cvery open\u201d to exploring partnerships and collaborations, though she was not specific about what this might entail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIn further comments relating to the BBC, she called on the government to ditch proposals that would allow the corporation to supplement its licence fee income with advertising. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tDogra said the impact of such a move on ad-funded networks would be \u201cseismic\u201d and \u201crisks undermining the BBC\u2019s commitment to universality.\u201d She continued: \u201cIt would be useful if the government takes that off the table and gives the industry some amount of certainty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAfter the <a data-id=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/04\/bbc-plans-2000-layoffs-1236861376\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/04\/bbc-plans-2000-layoffs-1236861376\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BBC announced 2,000 job cuts last month<\/a>, Deadline asked Dogra if Channel 4 could avoid having to make similar redundancies. She declined to rule out layoffs. \u201cI am doing a review of the strategy, the structure, the shape and size of the organization,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s too early to judge where that review will go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tInterviewed by Hollyoaks executive producer Hannah Cheers, Dogra confirmed her commitment to building Channel 4\u2019s production capabilities. The CEO said the strategy was important to Channel 4\u2019s financial sustainability, but acknowledged that it had been a bone of contention for producers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cSome of the discussions in the last years have made some of those relationships tense, and perhaps the conversations aren\u2019t happening in as constructive or transparent a level as we can possibly be having.
