{"id":777872,"date":"2026-05-06T18:48:39","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T18:48:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/777872\/"},"modified":"2026-05-06T18:48:39","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T18:48:39","slug":"jacksonville-bold-for-5-6-26-ooh-that-smell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/777872\/","title":{"rendered":"Jacksonville Bold for 5.6.26: Ooh, that smell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Even though Jacksonville got rid of its smelly paper mills in the 1990s and sits right by the Atlantic Ocean, the city still has a reputation for bad smells.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A new report from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcluck.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>McLuck<\/strong><\/a>, an online casino company, named Jacksonville the \u201cworst-smelling city in the U.S.\u201d The study examined factors such as air quality, the number of candle shops and bakeries, and other indicators to create a smell score. Jacksonville got 3.9 out of 10, the lowest in the country.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/toxic-jacksonville-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-795021 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/toxic-jacksonville-Large-640x427.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\"  \/><\/a>Jacksonville\u2019s paper mills are gone, but a new report says the city\u2019s smell problem still lingers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The analysis also found that Jacksonville has fewer candle shops, florists, and perfume stores than other cities. However, it did score well for cleanliness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cDespite having a higher cleanliness score than that of Washington in second, Jacksonville has been found to be the worst-smelling city in the U.S.,\u201d the analysis concluded.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the other end, Boston, Massachusetts, was named the best-smelling city in the country with a score of 9.64. Washington, D.C. came in second, and San Francisco, California, was third.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Boston is also \u201cthe second cleanest city with an impressive cleanliness score of 9.2\/10. Additionally, Boston also has the second highest number of bakeries across all cities analyzed, many of which are renowned for selling the famous Boston cream pie, North End cannolis, and indulgent sticky buns,\u201d the analysis found.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Judgment Day<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Several Duval County judicial candidates were re-elected unopposed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Other candidates will need to campaign.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Rhonda<\/strong> <strong>Peoples-Waters<\/strong>, <strong>Gary<\/strong> <strong>Flower,<\/strong> and <strong>James<\/strong> <strong>Nealis<\/strong> all qualified for re-election without any opponents. That means they can enjoy their Summer when they\u2019re not in court.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Congratulations to them all.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meanwhile, voters will have a choice in two races.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">County Court Group 1 sees <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jaxcriminaldefenseattorney.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>Matthew Lufrano<\/strong><\/a> face off against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lwsheltonforjudge.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>Latoya Williams Shelton<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/LUFRANO-SHELTON-scaled.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-795025 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/LUFRANO-SHELTON-640x360.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\"  \/><\/a>Matthew Lufrano and Latoya Williams Shelton advance toward a contested Duval County Court race after qualifying closed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Williams, who has been a criminal defense lawyer for over 15 years, is leading fundraising efforts with Shelton, the former Chair of the Jacksonville Area Legal Aid Board. Williams has about $273,000 on hand, while Shelton has about $23,000.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Group 13 sees a three-way race between the following: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jaxlegalaid.org\/2023\/03\/07\/leaders-in-the-law-melina-buncome\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>Melina Buncome<\/strong><\/a>, who won the 2022 Florida Bar Pro Bono Service Award for the 4th Judicial Circuit; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voterfocus.com\/CampaignFinance\/candidate_pr.php?op=cv&amp;e=40&amp;c=duval&amp;ca=1448&amp;rellevel=4&amp;committee=N4\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>Marquita H. Friends<\/strong><\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe reality is we have thumped the Democrats in this state since I\u2019ve been Governor, and we control the chambers, and obviously the Governor\u2019s (Mansion).\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/SPECIAL-SESSION-HOUSE-4.29.26-2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-793688 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SPECIAL-SESSION-HOUSE-4.29.26-2-640x427.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\"  \/><\/a>Angie Nixon uses a megaphone to protest the Congressional redistricting map the House was preparing to pass.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jacksonville Democratic Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AngieNixon\/status\/2050170793233891573\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>Angie Nixon<\/strong><\/a> briefly <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FBSaunders\/status\/2049524785596498381?s=20\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>pre-empted the vote<\/strong><\/a> with a small, hot-pink megaphone, shouting, \u201cThis is a violation of the constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The incident caused Democratic Reps. <strong>Allison<\/strong> <strong>Tant<\/strong> of Tallahassee and <strong>Marie<\/strong> <strong>Woodson<\/strong> of Hollywood to first vote \u201cyes\u201d on the measure, but they later changed their votes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nixon, a candidate for Senate after six years in Tallahassee, said: \u201cFighting for democracy is more important than having decorum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The event brought national attention to the Jacksonville legislator, something she hadn\u2019t received since starting her U.S. Senate campaign. Retired Lt. Col. Alex Vindman is her main opponent for the Democratic nomination against incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody. Vindman has much more campaign cash, but Nixon is considered the progressive in the race.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The event had some consequences. Two Democrats were startled and voted yes on the maps because of the noise. Naples Republican Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/yvette-benarroch\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>Yvette<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/yvette-benarroch\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>Benarroch<\/strong><\/a> also says she may have <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BenarrochYvette\/status\/2050021347951014360\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>ear damage<\/strong><\/a> from the incident.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Win, lose, or draw<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jacksonville City Council member <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RoryDiamond\/status\/2050602563397972189\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>Rory Diamond<\/strong><\/a> says the city should move forward with local redistricting after the <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/793667-supreme-court-weakens-key-tool-of-voting-rights-law-in-louisiana-case\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>U.S. Supreme Court\u2019s<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/793702-governor-florida-gop-say-callais-decision-compels-approval-of-congressional-map-proposal\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>Louisiana v. Callais<\/strong><\/a> decision, which has sparked a wave of redistricting in Florida and across the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Diamond, who can\u2019t run again because of term limits, says there is \u201cmore than enough time\u201d to finish redistricting before the January 2027 deadline for the city\u2019s 14 district-level City Council seats.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He posted on social media Saturday: \u201cWith the recent Supreme Court decision, Louisiana v. Callais, the Jax City Council map must be redrawn. Judge <a href=\"https:\/\/ecf.flmd.uscourts.gov\/cgi-bin\/HistDocQry.pl?209997324286699-L_1_0-1\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>(Marcia Morales Howard<\/strong><\/a>) relied heavily on race in drawing the map, and it is therefore unconstitutional. We have a duty to draft a race-neutral map. There is more than enough time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RoryDiamond\/status\/2050602563397972189?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-795028\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/TWEET-DIAMOND-640x368.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" height=\"273\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Republicans believe the decision means there is less need for seats created to protect minority representation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A new round of local redistricting, which Democratic Mayor <strong>Donna Deegan<\/strong> is unlikely to support, would probably focus on safe Democratic seats in Districts 7-10. These districts are where much of the city\u2019s Black population and Democratic voters are concentrated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jacksonville\u2019s map <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/577147-jax-redist\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>faced legal<\/strong><\/a> challenges before the 2023 Elections. A court decision in December changed the map north and west of the St. Johns River, forcing candidates to make quick decisions. Judge Howard sided with the plaintiffs and criticized what she called a \u201cfailure to address Jacksonville\u2019s 30-year history of racial gerrymandering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The map resulted in two majority-Black districts, four majority-Democratic districts, and three districts where Democrats make up more than 40% of voters. District 10 stands out as 87% Black and 87% Democratic, making it the city\u2019s most reliably Democratic District.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Even though Democrats outnumber Republicans in Duval County, Republicans have held a supermajority on the City Council. Ron DeSantis\u2019 appointment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hughes has a career steeped in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmc.com\/en-us\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>CMC Steel<\/strong><\/a>, which has more than 200 operations across several states and Europe. The Commercial Metals Co. has steel production sites and metal recycling operations in Florida, where Hughes is the director of operations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hughes was previously the Texas Works Manager at CMC Steel, where he also served as the Houston area manager for CMC Construction Services. Before that, Hughes served as the director of operations for CMC Steel Arkansas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hughes\u2019 educational background includes a bachelor\u2019s degree in mechanical engineering from Texas A&amp;M University. It\u2019s continuing the upward trend that began in January.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Florida had a 4.5% jobless rate at the start of the year, followed by 4.6% in <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/791695-florida-unemployment-rate-jumps-2-months-in-a-row\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>February<\/strong><\/a>. FloridaCommerce officials say 523,000 Floridians were unemployed in March, out of a total workforce of 11.15 million.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/unemployment-rate-Large.jpeg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-748443 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/unemployment-rate-Large-640x395.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"395\"  \/><\/a>Florida\u2019s no longer beating the national average.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Florida\u2019s unemployment rate is 0.4 percentage points higher than the national figure of 4.3% in March. So far, 2026 has been a dubious year for the Sunshine State\u2019s comparison to the U.S. jobless rate. For about five years prior, Florida\u2019s unemployment rate had been lower than the national rate. The national trend also decreased in March, falling from 4.4% in February.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There was a bright spot in the Florida jobless analysis, and that was in non-agricultural jobs. That area saw an increase of 28,100 jobs to 9.99 million workers in March, a 0.3% increase over February. In the annual comparison, though, the state dropped 22,400 jobs compared to March 2025, a decrease of 0.2% and another area where the national numbers were better than Florida, as there was a 0.2% increase year-over-year across the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">More than half of the 25 metropolitan areas FloridaCommerce tracks for employment data saw decreases in the annual comparison. There were 14 metro areas where the number of jobs slipped, with the Fort Lauderdale area leading the way and a 1% decline of 9,300 jobs. The West Palm Beach and Jacksonville metro areas also had the next highest annual job declines, respectively.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jacksonville lost 6,200 jobs compared to March 2025 figures. That\u2019s a 0.8% drop in the year-over-year job count.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Further data from the non-agricultural job market show that eight of the 10 major industries had negative annual job growth in March. Total government jobs were the hardest hit, with 12,100 fewer jobs, a 1% decline from March 2025. Financial services in the state lost 11,500 jobs over the past year, and construction lost 8,700 jobs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Cecil strategy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Upgrades are already underway at Cecil Airfield to accommodate operations for the U.S. Navy\u2019s P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Navy officials recently cleared the air facility on Jacksonville\u2019s West Side for the aircraft. Boeing Jacksonville is located at Cecil Airfield and is the center for aircraft modifications. It will make for a more powerful tool for monitoring submarine activity and surface threats worldwide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Boeing officials at Cecil implemented new sensors, enhanced communications and overhauled combat systems. The modifications will make the P-8A more connected to tactical units worldwide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Stadium work continues<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Construction continues at EverBank Stadium, the home of the Jaguars. Recently, photos of the work were posted on the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/everbankstadium\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">stadium\u2019s <\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/everbankstadium\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>official social media<\/strong><\/a> pages.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Photos from inside the stadium show cranes set up on the field and piles of dirt on the sides of the playing surface. Many seats have been removed. The upper decks are now bare, with all seats in those sections removed. Seats in the club section and in the north end zone areas have been removed. All the temporary cabanas that sit above the Bud Zone at the south end of the stadium have been removed. Also gone are the videoboards in the corners of the stadium that show highlights from other games and additional advertising during Jaguars games.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The cabanas on the pool level in the north end zone are gone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Exterior photos show scaffolding on the west side of the stadium that will eventually form the roof. The Jaguars say the protective canopy will reduce heat retention by more than 70%. As the Jaguars play the 2026 season, crews will continue their renovations.
