{"id":778339,"date":"2026-05-06T23:32:14","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T23:32:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/778339\/"},"modified":"2026-05-06T23:32:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T23:32:14","slug":"box-office-preview-mortal-kombat-ii-to-battle-devil-wears-prada-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/778339\/","title":{"rendered":"Box Office Preview: &#8216;Mortal Kombat II&#8217; to Battle Devil Wears Prada 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWho will be the fairest of them all at a very crowded Mother\u2019s Day <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/box-office\/\" id=\"auto-tag_box-office_1\" data-tag=\"box-office\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">box office<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWhile most tracking services are betting on the violent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/mortal-kombat-ii-review-karl-urban-1236586504\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">video game adaptation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/mortal-kombat\/\" id=\"auto-tag_mortal-kombat_1\" data-tag=\"mortal-kombat\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mortal Kombat<\/a> II<\/a> to prevail and top the North American chart with $40 million or more \u2014 one research firm is even suggesting $45 million to $49 million \u2014 New Line and parent company Warner Bros. are predicting a far more conservative opening in the $35 million range for a worldwide launch anywhere between $65 million and $80 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn 2021, Mortal Kombat was by all accounts a resounding hit on streaming when launching simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max due to the ongoing pandemic and a badly lagging box office, where the martial arts movie debuted to $23 million on its way to topping out at a tepid $42 million domestically and $84.4 million globally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWhile the actual number of streaming views was never revealed, a sequel came together relatively quickly, with Simon McQuoid returning to helm from a script by Jeremy Slater and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/mortal-kombat-ii-new-footage-1236564698\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Karl Urban joining the franchise as fan favorite character Johnny Cage<\/a>, a washed up \u201990s action star called to take part in a tournament that will determine the fate of Earthrealm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tNew Line and Warners have good reason to play it safe in its estimates, since the Mortal Kombat sequel could find itself in a close race with holdover <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/the-devil-wears-prada-2\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-devil-wears-prada-2_1\" data-tag=\"the-devil-wears-prada-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Devil Wears Prada 2<\/a>, which is fast on its way to becoming the biggest female-led film since Warner Bros.\u2019 Barbie in 2023 after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/box-office-devil-wears-prada-2-opening-1236582365\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">kicking off the summer box office<\/a> last weekend with a domestic debut of $77.2 million domestically and $234 million globally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/lifestyle\/style\/devil-wears-prada-cast-2026-looks-met-gala-anne-hathaway-1236585897\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Prada 2 has been enjoying brisk weekday business<\/a> \u2014 it certainly didn\u2019t hurt that the Met Gala took place May 4, the Monday following its opening \u2014 and should clear the $300 million mark in worldwide ticket sales before Mother\u2019s Day weekend gets underway. By the end of Sunday, May 10, which is Mother\u2019s Day, the 20th Century and Disney sequel should have $450 million or more in the bank as it prepares to cross $500 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBoth Mortal Kombat and Prada hover in the 77 percent range in regard to their Rotten Tomatoes critics\u2019 score. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/mortal-kombat-ii-review-karl-urban-1236586504\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">THR\u2018s review isn\u2019t so keen on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/mortal-kombat-ii\/\" id=\"auto-tag_mortal-kombat-ii_1\" data-tag=\"mortal-kombat-ii\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mortal Kombat II<\/a><\/a> but concedes it \u201cdeterminedly caters to its devoted fans, who don\u2019t seem to mind that the word \u2018combat\u2019 isn\u2019t really spelled with a k.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tLionsgate\u2019s Michael Jackson biopic, which is heading into its third weekend, also remains a formidable contender, particularly since kids are the film\u2019s biggest fans and have hence turned Michael into a family pic, answering the question if the film would play to families given the real-life controversies and allegations of abuse Jackson faced, but which are sidestepped in the movie. The film could earn another $30 million in North America alone this weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMichael has already grossed north of $400 million at the worldwide box office to rank as one of the top-grossing music biopics of all time, not adjusted for inflation. The big is Bohemian Rhapsody, which sports a global total of $911 million. While Michael should soon overtake the $216 million earned by the Freddie Mercury biopic domestically, it is unlikely to match its worldwide tally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSpeaking of families, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/the-sheep-detectives-review-hugh-jackman-emma-thompson-1236574806\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon MGM\u2019s critically adored The Sheep Detectives<\/a> is tracking to open in the $12 million to $15 million range domestically. The comedy-mystery is based on the 2005 bestselling German novel\u00a0Three Bags Full, and follows a flock of talking sheep who are determined to solve the suspicious death of their beloved shepherd, voiced by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/hugh-jackman\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hugh Jackman<\/a>, who had read them detective novels on a regular basis despite having no idea they could understand him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSheep Detectives currently sports a coveted 96 percent critics\u2019 score on Rotten Tomatoes, and is produced by Working Title and Three Strange Angels Productions, with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller listed among the executive producers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tLord and Miller, directors of 2026 box office hit Project Hail Mary, aren\u2019t the only A-list filmmakers with new projects on the Mother\u2019s Day menu.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tParamount is opening James Cameron\u2019s new concert documentary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/billie-eilish\/\" id=\"auto-tag_billie-eilish_1\" data-tag=\"billie-eilish\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Billie Eilish<\/a> \u2014 Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D), in theaters across the U.S. Tracking has the film opening anywhere from $6 million to $9 million. Cameron pioneered special 3D\u00a0cameras designed to make moviegoers feel as if they were part of a live experience that he used when filming Eilish.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Who will be the fairest of them all at a very crowded Mother\u2019s Day box office?
