He reached McCarthy\u2019s classmate, the Rev. Bernie Scianna, who \u201csomehow\u201d got someone who reached the bank\u2019s president, McCarthy said. The bank\u2019s president reiterated the bank\u2019s policy: Customers must change their phone number or address in person, not over the phone.<\/p>\n
When Scianna threatened to move Pope Leo\u2019s account to a different bank, the president said the bank didn\u2019t want to lose the pope\u2019s account.<\/p>\n
Shortly after that, the bank followed through, and changed the information on Pope Leo\u2019s account.<\/p>\n
McCarthy, an Augustinian friar from the South Side who has known Pope Leo for 43 years, told the story as a reminder to parishioners that the pope \u201cis like us,\u201d and \u201ca very humble guy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Born on the South Side and raised in Dolton, Pope Leo, elected nearly a year ago, brings a special connection to parishioners in the Chicago area \u2014 and across the U.S. \u2014 as the first American-born pope, McCarthy said.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo have someone of our own come and someone who we can understand when he talks \u2014 and he talks like us, he likes pizza, he likes Peeps, he likes the White Sox, you know, he likes things that we like and that we can connect,\u201d McCarthy told the gathering.<\/p>\n
