CHICAGO (WLS) — With Mother’s Day<\/a> just days away, two suburban women are using their unique experiences to help new moms and their babies.<\/p>\n

At Rush University Medical Center at any given time, there are 30 to 40 babies in the neonatal intensive care unit.<\/p>\n

Nurse Emma McGee has been caring for the little patients for six years.<\/p>\n

She is very familiar with the unit and some of the staff.<\/p>\n

Emma McGee was born prematurely in 1997.<\/p>\n

She and her twin brother are part of the NICU Hall of Hope.<\/p>\n

“Usually parents are really astonished to hear this story, and I think it gives them a lot of comfort,” McGee said.<\/p>\n

It’s a family affair. McGee’s mother has been a nurse for 17 years. Katie McGee recalled a difficult six weeks in 1997.<\/p>\n

“I will never forget how stressful it was, and I will never forget the people who were put in my path,” Katie McGee said.<\/p>\n

NICU nurse Doreen Doran was one of the nurses who cared for McGee and her brother as premature babies.<\/p>\n

“The day she came on the unit and her mom saw us together she was crying; the two of us had gone full circle,” Doran said.<\/p>\n

“It feels like a second home to me,” Emma McGee said.<\/p>\n

Both mom and daughter nurses say they love their patients and running into each other at work.<\/p>\n

“I would say, ‘hi, honey.’ Or she is so little I’d give her a little kiss on the head and people were like, ‘what’s going on here?’ And I’d say, ‘this is my preemie,'” Katie McGee said.<\/p>\n

“They don’t realize. Some people who just started are like, ‘who was that lady who just kissed you?’ That’s my mom,” Emma McGee said.<\/p>\n

This Mother’s Day, Katie McGee, who is a mother of five, is looking forward to a nice brunch.<\/p>\n

Emma McGee is working a 12-hour shift, helping the babies and moms make the best of the day.<\/p>\n
